Running backs in the NFL are not having a good off-season. There are plenty of talented RBs that surprisingly got axed in 2023 including Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook. The former Denver Broncos RB Melvin Gordon is one of those backs that are looking for a new team to represent in the off-season. Amidst his situation, the talented running back talked about the hardships of playing as a rusher in the NFL right now.
“It’s just so tough for running backs right now, man, you have a lot of running backs that’s out there. We just don’t get no love. It’s literally the worst position to play in the NFL right now. It literally sucks,” Melvin Gordon said this week on The Jim Rome Show.
“I still want to play. I got some tread on the tires, I’m just staying ready, It’s hard, though,.It’s hard training knowing that you’re not gonna be on a team. It’s tough mentally.”
As previously mentioned, there are a lot of talented running backs who have gotten zero love in the past few months. Elliott, Cook, and Leonard Fournette were all cut by their respective teams in a shocking move, and they still haven’t found a new home. For context, Dalvin Cook has received four Pro Bowl nods in his last four seasons and is still just 27 years old. But for some reason, he is struggling to find a new home in the NFL.
It seems like the running back position has lost its value as the NFL slowly moves forward as a pass-primary league. The New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley, who’s a top-5 running back in the league, is having issues securing a second contract with the Giants. That is the dark side of playing as a running back in the league right now.

Melvin Gordon is an 8-year NFL veteran
The explosive running back Melvin Gordon was drafted by the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Chargers) in the 1st round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
During his 5-year stint with the Chargers, Gordon failed to live up to the hype and registered just one 1,000+ rushing yard season. After his tenure in Los Angeles, Gordon joined the Broncos in 2020 and showed some promising flashes in his first two seasons with the team.
However, during his third season, Gordon became a liability in the offense, as he fumbled the rock a career-high five times in 10 games. The 30-year-old RB was released by the Broncos in mid-season and ended up as a practice squad player with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Now, he’s hoping to get another shot in the league in the upcoming season.
