The NFL 2023/23 draft is off to a blistering start with franchises having made crucial first round picks in a bid to improve their team ahead of the new season. The Dallas Cowboys who have seven draft picks to make opened their account in sensational fashion, by selecting Mazi Smith as the 26th overall pick.

Smith who is a defensive tackle played his college football for the Michigan, and made history by becoming the first defensive tackle to be selected by the Cowboys since 1991. The move might have come as a bit of a shock to few enthusiasts, given the franchise’s draft strategy in the past.

However, for Cowboys linebacker, Micah Parsons there could not be a better outcome that this. The third year linebacker was ecstatic after the Cowboys selected Mazi Smith and blurted out his excitement on television. As soon as the draft pick was made official, Parsons jumped out of his chair with joy while throwing around a few energetic fist pumps.

“Dan [Quinn] knew! Look at the text man. I told you, I told you Dan wouldn’t let me down!” Parsons exclaimed on Bleacher Report‘s live draft show. Following this, Parsons showed his colleagues the series of text messages exchanged between him and Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn.

It was clearly a joyous moment for Parsons, given the amount of effort he had put in to get the Cowboys to select Mazi Smith, even though it meant that the franchise were breaking a stereotype of their own. The 23-year-old also took a sly jibe at Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver, A.J. Brown after Smith’s selection saying, “No more QB sneaks A.J.”

The Cowboys have failed to build up a good defense ever since the appointment of head coach Mike McCarthy, and this selection could prove instrumental in helping them take care of their defensive plays in the upcoming season.
