Jim Harbaugh is getting a huge reward for taking the Michigan Wolverines into college football for the third consecutive year in the form of a contract extension. The head coach has landed a massive contract worth $125 million to continue with the Wolverines in the 2024 season. However, there’s a catch!
The huge contract includes a specific NFL clause that states that if Harbaugh accepts this offer, he cannot seek or entertain any NFL coaching offers for the entire 2024 season, as reported by the NFL’s Ian Rapoport.
In his nine years with his alma mater, the Wolverines, Harbaugh built an impressive 87-25 record. It also includes an unbeatable year where Michigan recorded a 13-0 season record; however, he had to serve a 2-3-game suspension.
The current contract of Harbaugh with Michigan extends to the 2026 season; however, he is mentioned in connection with the NFL coaching jobs. In fact, he had also interviewed with the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings in recent years.
The Wolverines had offered the head coach a five-year contract worth $55 million just earlier this month. But now, they have jumped straight to $125 million.
The remarkable career and generosity of Jim Harbaugh
Apart from college football, coach Harbaugh has great prominence across the league as well. In fact, before his tenure at Ann Arbor, he was with the San Francisco 49ers for four seasons and led the way for them to record 44-19-1 along with a Super Bowl appearance.
He also guided the Arizona Cardinals to a 29-21 record for four seasons from 2007 to 2010. He joined Michigan in 2014 and has earned around $8,254,600 in compensation so far this season. This is the 12th highest by college football coaches, as reported by USA Today’s salary database.
This base salary with the team is $7.63 million, in addition to $3 million from the postseason incentives. However, the head coach doesn’t care about the salary, as he had previously stated he wants players to be paid more, and if he had to work on a lower salary for that, he is ready to do it.
