Michigan State University head coach Mel Tucker and Brenda Tracy, a r*pe survivor and activist, worked together to fight the culture of sexual harassment in sports. They developed a good working relationship. Tracy attended a spring football game as an honorary captain and was asked to speak with the Michigan State football team a couple of times by Tucker.
Tracy filed a complaint against Tucker with the university’s office in December. She accused Tucked of sexual misconduct that took place during a phone call between the two in April last year. Tracy reportedly saw Tucker masturbate and make derogatory statements about her while remaining still for a few minutes. She was sexually harassed 25 years ago and claimed that Tucker’s actions brought back many bad memories.
“The idea that someone could know me and say they understand my trauma but then re-inflict that trauma on me is so disgusting to me, it’s hard for me to even wrap my mind around it,” Tracy said in an interview. “It’s like he sought me out just to betray me.” Tucker was the Chicago Bears DC for the 2013-14 season.
Tucker agreed to having masturbated during the phone call. He also claimed that it was consensual and the pair were involved in “phone sex” and denied the accusations of misconduct. “I am not proud of my judgment and I am having difficulty forgiving myself for getting into this situation, but I did not engage in misconduct by any definition.” He wrote in a statement given to the investigator.
