It’s hard for a football team to find and replace a quality quarterback, but when you are succeeding Tom Brady, the task becomes even harder. But Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans has complete faith in their new experienced and rookie duo of Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask.
Mike Evans, while talking with NBC affiliate Ari Alexander, praised his new teammates. “Kyle’s improved a lot, and I’m really impressed with what I’ve seen from Baker,” said Evans. Then he declared that whoever the quarterback is, they will win games.
If Speak’s Emmanuel Acho is to be believed, then the NFC is the weakest of the two divisions going into the 2023 season. According to him, eight out of the 10 highest-paid quarterbacks are in the AFC. Only the Cowboys and the Rams have a good chance of reaching the divisional finals.
However, Evans is focusing on having a good season. The Super Bowl LV winner has set the goal of breaking Jerry Rice’s streak of 11 straight seasons with 1,000 receiving yards. “I’m gonna definitely try to go get that,” said Evans. “I hope I can pass the great Jerry Rice and his record.” The four-time Pro Bowler already has nine in his bag, with 2018 being his most productive year with 1524 yards.
Evans has faith in his quarterbacks to lend him a hand so that he can break the record. Some might question his faith in Mayfield and Trask and point out that Brady played a big part in keeping his record intact. However, even before TB12 became a Buc, Evans was putting up mouth-watering numbers.
Can Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask help Mike Evans reach his 10th 1,000-yard season?
The comparison with Tom Brady will be made, and both Mayfield and Trask will have that in the back of their minds. Mayfield will be the most scrutinized throughout the season, going into his sixth NFL season.
Rachaad White, the Bucs running back, has shown his support for Mayfield. “He (Baker) brings great energy,” said White on Good Morning Football. “He’s a great guy. Confident, he has swagger—not as much swagger as me, but we’re working on that.” White also praised Evans and emphasized that the Bucs have a good chance to win the NFC.
Mayfield is the front-runner to be the starting quarterback. The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner has 16,288 passing yards and 102 touchdowns over 69 career starts. On the other hand, Trask will only be in his second year at Tampa. Last year, he only appeared in one game and had 23 passing yards, and if Shaun King’s inside sources are correct, Trask is not getting the nod over Mayfield.
