The Tampa Bay Buccaneers refuse to enter the rebuild and are rolling with Baker Mayfield as their starting quarterback post-Tom Brady era. However, they might start to consider rebuilding if they end up losing their star receiver Mike Evans. And they might lose him in the 2024 off-season. Evans and his agent have given the Bucs an ultimatum for a contract extension.
“I don’t know. We got a little bit of time left, but we’ll see,” Evans told reporters when asked about his contract extension during training camp. Mike Evans’ agent Deryk Gilmore recently released a statement that if both parties cannot reach a middle ground on Evans’ contract extension before Saturday, they will close their negotiations for the year.
Evans’ current contract will expire in March 2024. He could either re-sign with the Buccaneers or he can sign a new deal with some other team. The 30-year-old receiver said that at this stage of his career, he wants some security as in a long-term deal. He was also asked whether he would be open to returning to the Bucs next year if they failed to give him an extension before Saturday. Evans gave a bland answer.
“Ownership and management are going to do what they feel is best for the team and the team in the future, and I’m going to do what’s best for me and my future. And right now, that’s just playing some good ball,” said Evans.
The star receiver finished the interview by saying that this is the last time he’ll talk about his contract situation this season. Evans claims he’s focused on going out to the field and having a great campaign in the upcoming season.
Mike Evans is looking to register 10th straight 1000-plus receiving yards season
It is unknown whether the Buccaneers are looking to extend Mike Evans or get good value out of him by trading him before the deadline. But Evans is clear on what he is going to do, he is going to ball.
Evans is the only wide receiver in NFL history to register 9 straight 1000-plus receiving yards in his first 9 years in the league. And now, Evans looks to extend that record by registering another 1000-plus yards campaign in the ongoing season.
Evans has been consistently a great pass catcher and a great teammate. Even during the contract negotiations, Evans participated in training camps and never threatened to hold out. He still has some great years left in him and the Bucs should be looking to sign him to a long-term deal and keep him in Tampa Bay.
