On Wednesday, the NFL announced the Pro Bowl teams for the ongoing season. As usual, people were pissed about some of their players getting snubbed in the selections. But, one of the most blatant snubs was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. missing out on it. And now, Winfield’s teammate Mike Evans has shared his opinion on it.
During Thursday’s press conference, the Buccaneers wideout Mike Evans addressed the ahead of their week 18 game against the Carolina Panthers. In the presser, he talked about Winfield’s blatant snub.
A lot of guys get snubbed, but that was probably the biggest one that I’ve seen in my time in the league.Mike Evans on Thursday’s press conference
The Buccaneers defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. is having one of the best campaigns of his career. In 16 games, he has registered 117 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles, and 4 fumble recoveries. Many expected him to be named to the Pro Bowl team.
But, instead of him, the Arizona Cardinals DB Budda Baker, the Seattle Seahawks‘ safety Julian Love, and the Atlanta Falcons defensive back Julian Love were named as the starters from NFC. For comparisons, Baker has 0 interceptions, 0 sacks, and only 77 tackles. So, many people including Mike Evans can’t fathom how Baker got in ahead of Winfield.
Along with Evans, many others including current and former Buccaneers players and even Winfield’s father Antoine Winfield Sr. also called out the league over the blatant snub. Nonetheless, Winfield is almost guaranteed to be named in the first-team All-Pro selection, which is typically based on votes from reporters.
But, this will sting Winfield for years to come, especially since Pro Bowls play a huge part in contract incentives, future salaries, and even Hall of Fame inductions.
Buccaneers WR Mike Evans receives 5th Pro Bowl nod
Antoine Winfield Jr. might’ve been snubbed from the Pro Bowl teams, but the Buccaneers’ star wide receiver Mike Evans made it into the list.
The Bucs receiver, who registered his 10th consecutive 1000-plus receiving yards season was named to his 5th Pro Bowl team. This will further strengthen his case for the Hall of Fame once he retires from the sport.
Evans was the only Tampa Bay player to receive a Pro Bowl nod despite their surprisingly good outings so far. They are currently sitting with a flat 8-8 record and are on the verge of making the playoffs.
The Buccaneers can win the NFC South division for the 3rd straight year and reach the postseason if they defeat the Carolina Panthers, whom they are scheduled to face in their week 18 matchup.
