Mike Florio claims ‘simple restructuring’ of Dak Prescott’s contract won’t solve Cowboys playoff problem
Florio calculated the Cowboys potential financial situation post Prescott's contract extension.

Dak Prescott could find himself in a similar situation as Russell Wilson. In cap hell. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is due a contract extension, or he could walk free and choose his next destination.
A few days ago, Jordan Schultz of the Bleacher Report speculated that the Cowboys could put pen to paper with a blockbuster deal. If it comes to fruition, then Prescott could earn a better part of $60 million a year. As a result, he would become the highest-paid player, not just in his position but also in the entire NFL.
Seeing that the Cowboys are the richest sports team in the world, with a generous amount of cap space, the chances of Jerry Jones giving Prescott an extension appear likely to happen. However, it would mean taking several risks, as per NBC Sports‘ Mike Florio.
The contract already carries two voidable years; the Cowboys could (if the contract allows it or Dak [Prescott] agrees to it) implement a simple restructuring that would knock his $29 million salary for 2024 down to the league minimum of [$1.21 million]. The difference [$27.78 million] would be spread over 2024, 2025, and 2026.
Florio admitted that the move on paper seems to be a good one for the short term. But in the long run, it may prove to be a headache. By spreading the money for three years, it would thin out the salary, helping reach $18.52 million in cap space for 2024. But he argued it’s only good for the 2024 season.
If the Cowboys fail to extend Dak Prescott's deal before next March, he’d count for nearly $55 million against the cap in 2025—even if he signs elsewhere.Florio wrote
Will Dak Prescott stay with the Dallas Cowboys?
Nothing is set in stone when it comes to the Cowboys and Jerry Jones. So assuming that the Cowboys owner would positively give Dak Prescott an extension can’t be true. In retrospect, if Jones doesn’t decide to make a move soon, the 30-year-old quarterback could find himself anywhere in 12 months.
Jones has previously stated that he has faith in the two-time Pro Bowler. In his words, Prescott has all the attributes in his arsenal to lead the Cowboys to a long-cherished Super Bowl. Besides capitulating once again in the postseason, he was one of the best quarterbacks during the regular season.
In 2023, Prescott recorded his best-ever passer rating of his career at 105.9, along with his highest completion percentage at 69.5. He led the league in passing touchdowns with 36 and threw the fewest interceptions with nine when playing every game.
