The Dallas Cowboys have undergone quite a change this offseason. The NFC East team will be playing without their star running back Ezekiel Elliott for the first time since the team drafted him in 2016. Dallas ended up solidifying their defense by retaining Donovan Wilson, Leighton Vander Esch, Johnathan Hankins, and Dante Fowler.
Furthermore, the Dallas Cowboys also added Stephon Gilmore, a skilled cornerback who will be a great addition to their already solid defense. On the offensive front, Dallas signed wideout Brandin Cooks. With their roster now fairly balanced on all fronts, the pressure is back on head coach Mike McCarthy to ensure that this team performs and lives up to expectations, if not exceeds them.
Dallas finished the 2022 NFL season with a 12-5 record. The team ended up losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round. The Cowboys had a rollercoaster year this season. QB Dak Prescott was able to play in 12 games, threw for 23 touchdowns, and finished with a completion percentage of 66.2.
This year, fans expected CeeDee Lamb to step up to the plate and fill the void left by the departure of Amari Cooper. However, Lamb, who did improve, was not able to fully live up to the expectations.
This season may be a do-or-die year for Mike McCarthy

There is one more concern about the Dallas Cowboys: the team’s head coach, Mike McCarthy. Despite having won a Super Bowl with the Packers, McCarthy was ranked 18th in the NFL among active head coaches, as per CBS Sports. The head coach has had quite a few misses when it comes to his playcalling. His calls have often been criticized, and fans have been left scratching their heads watching him call out some of the most unexpected plays in critical moments.
Mike McCarthy faces issues with time management as well. In the playoff game against the 49ers, as the game was in its final moments, the head coach ended up opting for a QB draw, which just ended up taking a lot of time and negatively impacted the team’s chances to stage a comeback. It comes as no surprise that GM and owner Jerry Jones are closely watching Mike McCarthy and questioning if he is, in fact, the man for the job.
As per PFF‘s Sam Monson, Mike McCarthy’s job is at risk. “At some point, however, that patience runs out, and if Dallas has another typical underachieving season in 2023, it will be hard for Mike McCarthy to hold onto his job,” the analyst stated.
Mike is definitely on the hot seat, and Jerry Jones is getting impatient. Despite his best attempts to assemble a talented and balanced roster, the Cowboys seem to be going nowhere near the Super Bowl. The coach needs to figure out the mantra to get this team working together from the start; he does have to redeem himself and show fans that he is in fact the same coach who led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory.
