On Thursday, the Detroit Lions led by their quarterback Jared Goff shocked the NFL world and caused a major upset by defeating the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs in their week 1 matchup of the regular season. The Lions looked like legit contenders for the NFC North crown but some people including the NBC commentator Mike Tirico downplayed Detroit’s victory just because Travis Kelce and Chris Jones missed the game.
“This has an asterisk because of no Chris Jones and no Travis Kelce,” Tirico said on the broadcast when the Chiefs and Lions players shook hands on the field after the game.
The Chiefs’ All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce missed the game with a knee injury and the Pro Bowl defensive lineman Chris Jones still hasn’t reached a middle ground on his contract extension. While Kansas City’s defense did well for themselves despite the absence of Jones, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offensive unit certainly struggled without Kelce on the field.
The Chiefs’ receiving core put up one of the worst performances by receivers in a long time as they reportedly dropped 8 passes in the game. Kadarius Toney, who was supposedly the Chiefs’ number 1 receiver had 1 receiving yards in the entire game and negative 1 rushing yards. So, it is true that Mahomes and the Chiefs missed Kelce but that just shows the lack of depth in Kansas City’s roster.
It has nothing to do with the Lions, who were also missing some notable talents including their former first-round pick Jamieson Williams. So, the commentator making excuses for the Kansas City-based football team understandably did not sit well with the Lions fans on social media.

NFL fans on social media, especially the Lions fans bashed Mike Tirico for underplaying their team’s victory against the defending Super Bowl champions Chiefs. Fans called out the biased commentator on the social media platform X after the game. Check out some of the reactions below.
Nonetheless, the Lions have proven themselves by defeating the Chiefs in a tough road game. Now, they will be looking to dethrone the Minnesota Vikings from the NFC North crown and make a deep postseason run.
The Lions will look to build their momentum by securing a victory against the Seattle Seahawks, who they are scheduled to face next weekend. Repeating their week 1 season might be tough for the Lions since the Seattle-based franchise has arguably tougher defense than the Chiefs.
