“Devote every minute of officiating department”: Mike Vrabel’s intentional brash email pushes for consistency of crew

The NFL’s Competition Committee has been known to occasionally send out the wrong email that causes some sort of controversy. However, a recent email by Mike Vrabel was not so discreet. The intentional email called out the senior VP of the Officiating Department in a brash way.

The league recently sent out a video to all general managers and head coaches that included descriptions of how to properly sack a quarterback. Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel however, had quite a different response to send. In an email that was sent with the ‘reply to all’ feature, VP Perry Fewell was sent this email:

“I appreciate the time and energy that goes into these videos, but I suggest we devote every minute of our officiating departments time ensuring our officiating crews are as well trained in the clarifications we worked to create in the off season and that each crew is as consistent as possible. Thank you.”

Vrabel’s email echoes the sentiments of many, including those who could not speak out against the incident. With the integrity of the game currently not taking precedence in the NFL’s eyes, it is hard for officials to give up their other gigs to focus purely on the NFL.

The key for the league is to exercise proper control over its business- with the most important being given to those officiating the game. The last week especially has highlighted that the league has lost control over itself, as the passing of rougher penalties has not sat well with many.
