In a bizarre turn of events, the Cleveland Browns have sent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney home after his rash comments during an interview with cleveland.com. The former No.1 overall pick said the Browns don’t appreciate him and that he was frustrated with the team and was sure he wasn’t coming back for another season.
The Browns definitely did not welcome Jadeveon Clowney’s comments and publicly bad-mouthing the team and its coaching staff. He was effective immediately removed from practice ahead of their final matchup of the regular season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This situation oddly resembles the one where Odell Beckham Jr. was suspended by the team after weeks of drama. Beckham’s father shared an 11-minute video on social media where he accentuated plays where then quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t throw OBJ the ball.
Jadeveon Clowney publicly said the Browns favor Myles Garret over him
Jadeveon Clowney was selected first overall by the Houston Texans in the 2014 NFL draft. After spending five years in Houston and one each with the Seahawks and the Titans, Clowney finally landed in Cleveland. The 29-year-old had a productive first season with the Browns where he made 37 tackles, 9 sacks his most since 2018, and 2 forced fumbles.
Happy with his time in Cleveland, he resigned with the Browns on a one-year deal worth up to $11 million. This season the defensive end hasn’t been in the spotlight because he missed four games and has only made 2 sacks the entire season. He has attributed his poor performance to the Browns’ coaching staff who aren’t utilizing him in big plays per Clowney.
“Ninety-five percent sure I won’t be back,” Clowney told cleveland.com on Thursday. Jadeveon Clowney went on to release his pent-up frustration with the team and added that the Browns are giving preferential treatment to Myles Garrett as the organization is hell-bent on making the four-time Pro Bowl defensive end a Hall of Famer. He further added, “I need to be around somebody that believes in me and my ability.”
Myles Garrett expected better from Jadeveon Clowney
Myles Garrett responded to Clowney’s comments and said that he understood where he was coming from but he didn’t approve of the way Clowney handled the situation. “This is our team,” Garrett said. “He’s my brother. He’s my teammate and I wish we could have talked about this man-to-man and to us as coaches as well. Could have sat us all down and had just a conversation and that would’ve probably been the way I would’ve handled it.”
Myles Garrett said that he will continue to have a “cordial” relationship with Clowney and didn’t take his comments to heart. He added that if someone on the team doesn’t feel appreciated then they should go somewhere they will be “wanted and loved and appreciated.” When Myles was asked by a reporter if the Browns organization decided to mend the fences with Clowney and have him back on the team he replied: “We want volunteers, not hostages.”
