Star tennis player Naomi Osaka attended the college football game between the USC Trojans and San Jose State Spartans on Sunday, August 27. During the game, she gained clarity about the sport after witnessing USC quarterback Caleb Williams play.

Osaka, who is a four-time Grand Slam winner, dabbled in the world of football after staying quiet for a couple of weeks on social media. The 25-year-old announced earlier in January that she was about to give birth and subsequently withdrew from several major tournaments, like the Australian Open.

She broke her two-week online hiatus by sharing a short clip from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In the magic of the floodlights, the Trojans and the Spartans fought like the juggernauts they are. Osaka wrote, “Ngl football is really fun once you understand the rules.”

The stadium roared as Caleb Williams and Co. trampled their opponents 56-28 in their season opener. Williams showed why he is touted to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The 21-year-old finished last season with 4,537 yards and 42 passing touchdowns to win the Heisman Trophy. By achieving that tally, he has already set the bar high for himself.

He got off to a blinder on Sunday evening as he assisted senior-year wide receiver Dorian Singer for a 13-yard touchdown in the first quarter. As the game progressed, the Trojans grabbed urgency by the neck.

Williams made three sharp passes to earn a first down at their 24-yard line. However, the next play reminded the audience in the stadium why he is in line for another Heisman before he enters the NFL. The Trojans fumbled the ball on the next snap, but Williams pounced and found Tahj Washington for a 76-yard touchdown. Somewhere in the stands, Naomi Osaka cheered along with the home crowd.

Caleb Williams looks set to prove the doubters wrong after yesterday’s performance. Several analysts predicted that he wouldn’t have the same impact as last year because top receiver Jordan Addison left for the Minnesota Vikings. But last night showed his quality hasn’t dipped; rather, he can continue from where he left off.

The only area he needs to improve upon, as per Daniel Jeremiah, is the unnecessary sacks he takes. “Williams takes unnecessary sacks at times,” Jeremiah wrote for NFL.com. “It’s hard to blame him because he’s so incredibly creative.”

Another season in his locker room will undeniably be a boon for Caleb Williams. He and the USC Trojans will face the Nevada Wolf Pack on September 3.
