The controversial owner Dan Snyder recently sold the Washington Commanders franchise to a group led by Josh Harris for a record price of more than $6 billion. The Commanders fans are excited about the team’s future post-Snyder disaster era. Amidst this, the name of the Washington-based football team is once again under question.

A Native American group named the Native American Guardian’s Association (NAGA) has started a petition asking the franchise to change its name back to the Redskins.

“We invite all Americans to stand up for the dignity of EVERY AMERICAN under assault in today’s increasingly nonsensical culture wars,” the petition says. “This is not a simple left or right issue for Americans; it reaches across the political spectrum dating back to our Founding Fathers.”

In 2020, the Washington team changed its name Redskins after years of pressure from people across the country. They initially changed their name to the Washington Football Team before changing it to the Commanders in 2022. But now, a group that has vowed to protect the Native American culture wants the new owner Josh Harris to rechange the name back to the Redskins.

The petition was addressed to the Commanders’ new leadership group and has over 90,000 signatures. “As the NFL franchise representing the nation’s capital, you have a distinct opportunity to recognize the history and value of the American Indian,” the petition said.

NAGA, which is led by a board of Native Americans is an organization that is working towards the goal of increasing education about Native people in public institutions and “greater recognition of Native American Heritage through the high profile venues of sports” according to their website.

Following the ownership change in Washington, the new owners could be looking to change their team name once again in 2024, according to multiple reports. The team could be looking for a complete rebrand following the disaster era of Dan Snyder. That could lead to the franchise-changing its name a third time in the last few years.

Just minutes after the sale was approved by the league, NFL fined Snyder $60 million over sexual assault and toxic workplace allegations. So, it is understandable if Josh Harris opts for total rebranding.

Nonetheless, the Commanders fans are excited about the future of the Washington-based football team. They believe the new ownership could lead their team to a Super Bowl victory soon.
