There’s good news for NFL fans! Looks like Netflix is diverting its interest back to the NFL as it announced the upcoming sports docuseries “Receiver,” focusing on the 2023 season. Just last year, the platform produced the “Quarterback” docuseries of elite QBs– Patrick Mahomes and Kirk Cousins.
This time, with the Receiver docuseries, Netflix has covered the 2023 season of five prominent receivers including Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, and George Kittle. The other two big pass catches are Deebo Samuel and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Netflix is releasing this docuseries in Summer, in collaboration with NFL Films, Mahomes’ 2 PM Productions, and Peyton Manning‘s Omaha Productions, who also produced the ‘Quarterback’ series.
Initially, as Manning has revealed they ought to create a sequel of the Quarterback series as a second second. However, notable names such as Dak Prescott, Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts, and Trevor Lawrence declined the offer to be featured in the series. That’s when the creators shifted to the wide receivers.
In an official announcement, Netflix executive Gabe Spitzer said:
The natural progression is from a pass to a catch, so we're excited to dive into the 'Receiver' world after the success of our 'Quarterback' series. NFL Films and Omaha Productions have delivered again in finding unique and dynamic athletes who will further highlight the drama of this sport on and off the field.Gabe Spitzer said
Having the same pattern as the previous NFL docuseries, this upcoming series would also include a total of eight episodes 45 minutes long. The series would premiere on Netflix in the coming Summer.
Why is the NFL featuring those five pass-catchers in the ‘Receiver’ docuseries?
All five wide receivers set to be featured in the ‘Receiver’ docuseries had a nominal season in 2023– giving fans plenty of interesting content. The Raiders’ star Adams recorded his fourth straight 1,000-yard receiving season, despite the team’s struggle at 8-9.
Kittle and Samuel led their team– the San Francisco 49ers, straight to the Super Bowl. Although they couldn’t secure a victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, they dominated the game for the better half.
Detroit Lions’ St. Brown ranked fourth across the league for receiving yards of 1,515. He also led them to the playoffs after a drought since 2016. And Jefferson recorded 1,000-plus receiving yards despite missing seven games due to injury.
