The New England Patriots are venturing into a new chapter in the history of their franchise. For the first time in over 3 decades, the team has a fresh face as head coach – Jerod Mayo. The biggest question that remained so far was who would be the face of the team at the quarterback position. Will the team stick with Mac Jones or decide to move on from him? The team has partly answered this question by eliminating Mac Jones from the equation, the quarterback has been traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news. Mac Jones had a rough year this season. He threw for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions this season. He recorded a QBR of 36.7 putting him in the bottom 5 starting QBs in the NFL. Recent reports had been hinting that the quarterback’s time with the Patriots was up after his inconsistent season.

While the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Patriots have agreed on the trade, it cannot be processed until the commencement of the new league year on Wednesday. In addition to this, the quarterback has to pass the physical examination, only then will the trade go through. The Patriots are likely to settle for a sixth-round pick in exchange for Jones, no other consideration is sought by the team as per the initial report.
Mac Jones will be returning to his hometown with this trade
While Jones would not be too keen on the terms of his trade, there is a bright side to this. The quarterback will get a chance to return to his hometown of Jacksonville, where he was born and play for his city. In an unexpected turn of events, he will now serve as the backup quarterback to Trevor Lawrence, a player who was drafted first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and just 14 picks ahead of Jones.

Mac Jones struggled for the entirety of the 2023-24 NFL season. While he was not the sole reason for the New England Patriots’ 4-13 record for the season, he did hold the offense back significantly. There were numerous occasions wherein frustration was evident on Belichick’s face and on the face of owner Robert Kraft. With his departure, the Patriots have Bailey Zappe as their QB on the roster. His future remains uncertain as well, for now, it seems that he is likely to be retained by the team.

All signs indicate that the team is keen on drafting a quarterback in the upcoming draft. The Patriots have the third pick in this year’s draft and from the candidates available, have shown a keen interest in Jayden Daniels. Mac Jones will be the backup QB in Jacksonville behind Trevor Lawrence.
