“No timetable as the review is ongoing”: The NFL cites uncertainty around the timeline of Deshaun Watson’s return

Cleveland Browns jumped at the opportunity to snag Pro Bowl QB Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. The team considered the fact that Watson is in some deep legal trouble following allegations of sexual harassment from 22 women. The Browns seem to be confident in the fact that Watson will get out of this unscathed. They believe that the league will also allow the QB to play in the upcoming season. However, that is still uncertain.

League officials reportedly will meet with Watson this week as per sources. The spokesman for the NFL, Brian McCarthy has publicly stated that the NFL “will decline to comment on that tweet.” The league is coming under pressure from not only the Browns organization but also fans and others who are watching how the league will punish Watson and if it will be setting a solid example so that incidents of this nature do not occur in the future.

“We have no update, decline to comment on tweet”: Brian McCarthy on Deshaun Watson

Though Deshaun Watson has signed a massive contract with the Browns, there is no guarantee that he will be able to step on the field this season

McCarthy’s remark with respect to the new report has come in response to the questions he was faced with on Monday morning that were aimed at finding out about the possible timetable of Watson’s return. The questions also aimed at finding out if any actions will be taken up against Watson. “We have no update, there’s no timetable as the review is active and ongoing,” McCarthy responded.

A meeting with a player indicates that the situation is nearing its end, the league meets with the players at the end after interviewing the accusers. It is not known for now if the league has met with all of the 22 accuser’s of Deshaun Watson. The league met with some of them through lawyer Tony Buzbee, some of them complained last year about how they were treated during the questioning process.

Watson is likely to be placed on paid leave until the 22 lawsuits are resolved. Roger Goodell made it crystal clear that if any action will be taken against Watson, he will just be suspended.

The NFL is not required to wait until all of the 22 cases are resolved before suspending Watson, the league can act now or later. It also has the option to impose a preliminary suspension along with the door open for further action later.

The league will suspend Watson for now in all likelihood, they do not want to take an impulsive decision as of yet and it has learned in recent years to wait as long as possible until reaching upon a solid conclusion.

However, a decision needs to be made at the earliest as the Browns need to know if he will be playing or not. He will also need time to fight whatever the league hopes to do, through the two-tiered procedure that starts with an independent hearing officer and ends with an appeal that is taken care of by the Commissioner.

The impact of Watson’ case will also determine the future of Baker Mayfield as the Browns appear to have kept him and not released or traded him to make sure they have a solid backup option.
