By this point, we are halfway into the NFL season already. Teams have a good idea of where they stand in their respective divisions and the changes they will need to make in order to be ready for the second half of the season.

The trade deadline exists for this reason: while normally trades are made by teams in the off-season to give players a chance to become well-versed in a different playbook and plenty of time to build chemistry with new teammates, the league for one week during the season gives teams a chance to make trades to address their imminent needs.

The trade deadline is a mid-season window for teams to fulfill their position requirements. With teams seven weeks into this season, there have been multiple injuries that have put them in a tough spot at positions across the field. The trade deadline gives them an opportunity to get the right pieces on board and finish the season strong. The NFL trade deadline for 2023 will be ending on the 31st of October, 4:00 PM ET.

The trade deadline will decide the fate of a lot of players who have hoped to make a positive mark on the season but have not been able to do so yet. Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans, Zach Ertz of the Arizona Cardinals, and DeAndre Hopkins are some of the players whose fate for the remainder of the season hangs in the balance. They have not played at the level they are accustomed to, and it has been due to the systems that they are playing in.

The next NFL trade window opens on March 13

This will be the last opportunity for teams and players to make changes to their roster. After the current deadline comes into effect at 4 PM on Halloween, teams will have no choice but to stick to their existing roster until the commencement of the next official league year, which is on March 13, 2024.

Under normal circumstances, teams across the NFL are reluctant to make a lot of changes mid-season as it negatively affects the existing team chemistry and locker room spirit. In 2022, teams went ahead and put 12 trades in place on the day of the mid-season deadline, making it the highest in the last three decades.

The most significant trade of this deadline has been the Philadelphia Eagles‘ acquisition of safety Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for Terrell Edmunds and a 2024 fifth and sixth-round pick. The moves made by teams this week will be the determining factor that will decide if they will get a shot to make the playoffs and possibly the Super Bowl or not.
