The Indianapolis Colts defensive backs Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and Rashod Berry, along with free agent defensive tackle Demetrius Taylor, have been suspended by the NFL for gambling and betting charges. Allegedly, Isaiah Rodgers even won $1000 betting on his team.
After a thorough investigation, the NFL committee has decided to impose a one-year ban, which will prevent them from playing in the 2023 season. The statement read, “The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. We will continue to educate (our players, coaches, and staff) on the policies in place.” Breaking the law will incur “significant consequences.”
NFL insider and analyst Dov Kleiman posted on Twitter the news about the punishments of Isaiah Rodgers and others.
Isaiah Rodgers blasted by the netizens after the news of his ban on gambling broke
Unsurprisingly, Twitter went berserk after the Isaiah Brown ban. Most ridiculed Rodgers for his foolishness, saying he risked his football career for only $1000.
Isaiah Rodgers was enticed into betting by one of his friends in Florida. It started with small amounts of $20 to $30 and grew as time went on. Last season, Rodgers bet $1000 on his team. However, it was reported that there was no evidence of any kind of manipulation.
Moreover, Adam Schefter reported that there were several cases under investigation. At least 10 players have received suspensions since the start of 2022. Besides Rodgers and Rashod Berry, Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill of the Detroit Lions also received bans, but only for six games.
While the investigation was going on, Jeff Miller, who is the executive vice president of communications, public affairs, and policy at the NFL, said the players could bet on non-NFL games after rounds of talks with the NFL Players Association. However, gambling in spots is becoming a headache for the committee with frequent violations from the players.
Initially, when the news about his gambling went viral, Rodgers posted an apology on Twitter. He took full responsibility for his actions and was ready to rectify the situation. Moreover, he vowed to work hard in the field.
Isaiah Rodgers had a great opportunity going into the 2023 season. The Massachusetts University graduate was in line to replace Stephon Gilmore after his trade to the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason. Unfortunately, Rodger’s ban means that instead of him, rookie Julius Brents will make his debut. He had signed a four-year, $3,440,124 contract in 2020.
The Colts have not made any announcements about their strategy going forward with Rodgers. But it doesn’t seem very positive for him.
