Nick Bosa‘s lengthy contract holdout finally ended four days before the San Francisco 49ers’ 2023 NFL journey. The dynamic defensive end has decided to extend his stay in the Bay Area.
They were cutting it close with this one. The 25-year-old is one of the key cogs in Kyle Shanahan‘s 49ers. As per the head coach, Bosa is on his way to join the rest of the squad. Despite the growing tension between both camps, he was picked for the 53-man roster. This was a sign that Bosa would eventually sign a new contract, so the matter was, when would that be? Fortunately, everyone in the 49ers front office can breathe a sigh of relief.
“It’s a hell of a bonus to get him here,” Shanahan told the press on Wednesday. “We’re obviously really excited about it.”
While there’s no clarity as to whether Bosa would start in week 1, his being on the tea eases the tension. Then there’s the question about his fitness. But Shanahan has faith that last season’s defensive player of the year will have a great physique.
“I know Nick will come in shape,” he added, claiming that it’s in Nick Bosa’s DNA to stay in shape. “We’ll see when he gets here. I know he’ll be good.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that the 49ers are extending Bosa’s deal, which was worth $170 million over five seasons with $122.5 million guaranteed. He is now the top-earning defensive player in the NFL, besting Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and his older brother, the Chargers’ Joey Bosa.

Nick Bosa’s deal is crucial for the San Francisco 49ers
Good pass rushers are rare in the NFL. A lot of teams try their best to develop players with the presence of mind and the eyesight to understand what is happening at the line of scrimmage. Predicting the opposing quarterback’s movement takes years of knowledge and practice to master. But Nick Bosa has graduated with flying colors.
In the past two seasons, the Ohio State alumnus has been sacked 34 times. Bosa staying healthy is a good sign for the 49ers. They ranked third in points allowed and second in yards per play allowed when he took to the field.
Without the former first-round pick, it’s fair to say they don’t have much depth in the DE department. Clelin Ferrell and ex-cowboy Taco Charlton are the backups. But they haven’t played much recently. So it’s fair to say that if the San Francisco 49ers want to push for the Super Bowl once again, they need Nick Bosa to spearhead their offensive line.
