49ers DE Nick Bosa set to lose around $1,000,000 for missing the preseason game against the Raiders despite having a base salary of only $17,859,000
Bosa wants to become the highest paid in his position in the NFL.

Nick Bosa wants to be one of the best-paid defensive linemen in the NFL, hence the holdout and absence from the preseason practice sessions. But due to the current collective bargaining agreement, the San Francisco 49ers can impose a massive one million-dollar fine. However, can they afford to levy that much of a penalty?
The California franchise is building a squad to reclaim its dominance in the NFC West and bring back the glory days of the ’90s. They have been in good form the last couple of years, reaching the playoffs and even the championship games.
Bosa, who has been with the 49ers since 2019, is still on his rookie contract. He had signed a $33 million extension. But after another impressive season in which their defense was one of the best in the NFL, the 25-year-old aims to become the best-paid player in his position. That is the reason why Bosa has sat out training camp and even missed the preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. It will have some serious repercussions if he keeps holding off, as NBC Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted.
“As a player in his fifth-year option, Bosa’s fines include $40,000 for each day of training camp missed,” Florio revealed. “[Per] Article 7, Section 7(h) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Bosa can also be fined a regular-season game check for each preseason game boycotted.” (H/T: ProFootballTalk)
While the 49ers can waive the fine if they choose to, it will also lessen their chances of keeping Nick Bosa. The current highest-paid player in his position is Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle, Aaron Donald. They would need to pay either something similar or more to stop him from entering free agency.

Kyle Shanahan finally spoke about Nick Bosa’s holding out from practice

It wasn’t a great outing against the Raiders last week. But the teams mostly fielded rookies and reserve players, so even if Nick Bosa was around, he may not have played either way. That does not mean head coach Kyle Shanahan can afford to lose one of his first-team players. He finally opened up about the Pro Bowler’s absence and whether he was concerned or not.
“No, not at all,” he told the reporters, as per NFL.com. “Because I don’t know if he has ever done a training camp, and he has done pretty well.”
Shanahan revealed that it does not affect the team from a defensive standpoint if a lineman is not present. He has faith in Nick Bosa and believes that he will sign a contract very soon.
