“Nick Foles appreciates it,” Chicago Bears release former Super Bowl MVP quarterback ahead of new NFL season

The Chicago Bears have finally made the decision to part away from one of their veteran players, Nick Foles. The franchise was on the lookout for a trade option ever since the start of the offseason, but those efforts did not come to fruition.

Therefore in the best interests of Nick Foles and the Bears, they decided to release the former Super Bowl MVP, who will now become a free agent and can look for a franchise on his own. The 33-year old quarterback was traded into the franchise by former Bears coach Matt Nagy, in a bid to offer Mitchell Trubisky some competition.

Foles earned himself a starting quarterback spot in his first season at the Bears in 2020, after a couple of games. However, his run did not last long as he suffered a hip injury. The injury made him fall down the pecking order once again, and he found it hard to get into the thick of things in the 2021 season.

He only made a single appearance in the entire 2021 season to almost signal the end of his time with the Chicago Bears. He carried a $10.67 million cap hit in 2022 after appearing in only one game this past season. By cutting Foles now, the Bears take on a $7.66 million dead cap hit, but the team will gain $3 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.

According to Mike Garofolo, “The #Bears have agreed to release QB Nick Foles, his agent Justin Schulman confirmed. The team’s new regime decided to allow Foles to find his next home rather than continue to search for a trade partner. “Ryan Poles did the classy thing and Nick appreciates it,” Schulman said.
