Patrick Mahomes is a frontrunner for the Most Valuable Player honor this season and there’s a huge gap between him and other candidates. But Nick Wright believes that Mahomes is not a lock for MVP.

The Kansas City Chiefs franchise quarterback is one of the most electrifying players in the league. Ever since he entered the league after being drafted by the Chiefs in the 2017 NFL draft, he has been torching the NFL defenses. Besides his rookie year when he played in just one game, he’s been to Pro Bowls in all the other seasons. Patrick Mahomes has been to 5 Pro Bowls.

The 27-year-old quarterback has already won all the major awards a player can win in the NFL. He won the league MVP in 2018 when he threw for 5097 yards and 50 touchdowns, and he has also already won the Super Bowl MVP in 2020 when he helped the Chiefs to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years. And now, he’s looking to win his second league MVP this season.

Even though he’s leading the league in most of the quarterback statistics and the second-best candidate Jalen Hurts missing games due to injury, Nick Wright does not believe Mahomes is a lock for the MVP award.

Fox Sports Analyst Nick Wright believes Patrick Mahomes is not a lock for the MVP despite his stupendous season because whoever wins in the Bills-Bengals game in week 17 will get better media attention.

Speaking on his show First Things First, Wright said since Joe Burrow and Josh Allen have already defeated Patrick Mahomes, whoever wins in their matchup will have an advantage over Mahomes and it may play a part in Mahomes not winning the MVP honor.

For instance, if Burrow wins his matchup against Allen, Wright believes that the media will spin a story about how Burrow should be the MVP because he has beaten Allen, and Mahomes and his team are also the defending AFC Champions. Wright also believes that the media doesn’t want Mahomes to win another MVP.

“If Patrick Mahomes wins another boring, perfect game, it’ll hurt him. The QB winner of Bills-Bengals is going to have a lot of momentum in the final wk from the media hoard who doesn’t want Mahomes to get what’s rightfully his,” said Wright about the MVP conversation.

Nonetheless, Burrow, Allen, and Mahomes will all look to strengthen their chances at the MVP honor this week. Burrow and Allen will face each other’s teams while Mahomes will look to put up big numbers against a dismantled Denver Broncos team in Week 17 of the NFL regular season.
