Dak Prescott to Patriots? Nick Wright breaks down the ideal scenario in which New England could sign the Cowboys QB next season
Wright claimed the Patriots cap space is the positive that can lure Dak Prescott to Boston.

The New England Patriots need a quarterback, and Nick Wright suggested that Dak Prescott would be the best fit for the franchise. Prescott is in the last year of his Dallas Cowboys contract and will see a cap hit of more than $55 million.
The two-time Pro Bowler signed a four-year, $160 million deal with the Cowboys. It will run out before the start of the 2025 season. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are ready to let Prescott play out his contract. As a result, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
In the meantime, Wright pointed out that the quarterback-needy Patriots have the second-most salary cap space under the updated cap from the league. In 2025, they would jump up to the first spot because the cap space rolls over to the following season.
During Friday’s segment of FOX Sports First Things First, Wright proposed the idea that the New England Patriots should sign the 30-year-old when he hits free agency.
So the [New England] Patriots are on the books for $200 million in cap space next year. What if the Patriots... traded the pick for a three, particularly if Drake Maye's there, because people want it even more because people seem to love him.Wright said
He advised the Patriots to draft a tackle (possibly Joe Alt from Notre Dame or Tallese Fuaga from Oregon State) and one of the wide receivers (Marvin Harrison Jr., Rome Odunze, or Malik Nabers). They see out the 2024 season with Jacoby Brissett and then sign Dak Prescott in 2025.
Trade down and start [to] build the team, install a culture, and install an older, known quantity at quarterback next season.Wright said
Wright explained how the Patriots could sign Dak Prescott
When Prescott leaves the Dallas Cowboys, he will demand a minimum wage of $60 million a year. Besides the Cowboys, the Patriots will be the only ones willing to pay that sort of money because most of the teams would have acquired a QB through the 2024 draft.
Per Wright, the Patriots should use the massive cap space to pay the Mississippi graduate big in his first year and then a fraction of it in the remaining years.
We [the Patriots] could do the rare front-loaded deal where, in his first year, the cap hit is $75 million bucks if we want... and then it goes down.He said.
The Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, has the leverage to wait and watch. If Prescott leads the team to a Super Bowl, then he automatically deserves an extension. However, if he doesn’t, then they don’t have to extend his contract. And when he becomes a free agent, they could give him a one-year ‘prove it’ deal because they have the cap space.
