The Denver Broncos had one of their worst seasons last year as they registered a 5-12 record. They almost tied with their worst record of 4-12 in 2010. Following the disastrous 2022 season, the team sacked their head coach Nathaniel Hackett, and appointed Sean Payton as the new head coach.
However, things did not take a drastic turn as the team is having a poor run in the ongoing campaign. Further, the relationship between the head coach and the team’s star quarterback, Russell Wilson, is not in its place. According to multiple sources, the relationship has gone down and Payton might bench Wilson in the coming games.
The Broncos have lost consecutive games in the 2023-24 season. Both of these games witnessed close contests. In the first game, the Broncos lost by 17-16 against the Las Vegas Raiders. In the second game, the Broncos got a lead of 21-3 against the Washington Commanders and no one expected that the Broncos would end up losing the game by 33-35. It was alarming for the Broncos and the lousy relationship between the head coach and the quarterback started hitting the headlines.
Speaking explicitly on the following issue, football analyst Nick Wright said that Payton is finally getting to understand what went wrong with the Broncos, last season. It was Russell Wilson. The analyst further added Payton might bench the quarterback in the coming game.
“Sean Payton is slowly but surely building the case for when he benches Russell Wilson. It is just what happening. I mean why do we know that they are having a problem? Why is this a story? It was not like the sources close to the team tell us. It is Sean Payton in front of the microphone telling everybody,” the analyst said.
He further added, “The moment the game ends and then it is press conference and now it is all of a sudden Sean Payton is realizing the issues that were ‘the worst coaching job in NFL history’ were actually ‘Russell Wilson issues’ and I can’t fix those.”
What happened between Sean Payton and Russell Wilson?
The tiff between the two Broncos’ bigshots became public after the match vs. the Commanders. Payton was the first to pull the trigger as he indirectly blamed Russell Wilson for the defeat and that, too in an open press conference. He called out Wilson for his slow communication and stated that it had an impact on the team’s collapse. Payton even suggested Wilson wear a wristband for fast communication.
“I think, No. 1, the first thing that we always try to look at…but we have to do a better job of as coaches…is reduce the verbiage,” Payton said. “If we have a longer play, then we can easily get to a wristband. We just have to reduce the variables.”

Despite Wilson’s decent game against the Commanders, Payton did not care to put the gun on his shoulders. The quarterback finished the game with three touchdowns and 18 of 32 passes, a below-par 56.3% pass completion. The duo has failed to register a single win for the Broncos this season and as things stand, the head coach may sideline him in the coming time.
