The New England Patriots are stuck in one of the worst possible positions any professional team could be in. In fact, Nick Wright believes there’s no AFC team furthest from a Super Bowl than Bill Belichick’s team. The seasoned analyst claims that the New England Patriots are in no position to go all the way in 2023.
FOX First Things First’s host, Wright, is adamant the Patriots do not have the squad they used to. “Is there any team in the AFC further from a Super Bowl?” Wright asked his co-hosts, Cris Carter and Chris Broussard. He may be hinting at how the Patriots have weakened and taken a nosedive as a franchise following the successful Tom Brady era.
They were mainly discussing which team would get better and be close to the Super Bowl in the next five years. Even with legendary coach Bill Belichick at the helm, Wright has very little faith in the Patriots to do what it takes to turn the corner and get back to their winning ways.
“Pick AFC teams to win a Super Bowl in five years, would the Patriots be the last pick of the draft? They probably would,” said Nick Wright, who is married to Danielle Wright.

As Nick Wright says, are the Patriots not good enough to reach the Super Bowl in the next five years?
While Nick Wright is correct in his assessment that the Patriots are weaker compared to when Brady and Rob Gronkowski ruled the NFL, they still have Belichick, as Carter pointed out. “Why will we (the Patriots) be last? We have the greatest coach of all time,” Carter argued. While that may be true, Belichick himself has lost some ground, and that’s evident by their 8-9 record last season, finishing 3rd in the AFC.
Carter also pointed out that they have a good defense as compared to other teams in the division. They have the experienced Ja’Whaun Bentley, Matthew Judon, and Myles Bryant on the team, but only Josh Uche had a good 2022 besides Judon.
Moreover, he also pointed out the Patriots having quarterback Mac Jones in their squad, who had a decent outing last season. Since being picked as a first-round draft pick in 2021, Jones has tried his best to fill the void Brady left. Even though he only played 14 games last season, Jones rushed for 2997 yards and scored 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In his first season, he was also shortlisted for the Pro Bowl. Many believe the 24-year-old just needs a quality and elite receiver alongside him, someone like free agent DeAndre Hopkins.
The Patriots do lack in the offensive department, as Nick Wright pointed out, even though they appointed Bill O’Brien in January. Whether that makes a difference or not, we will find out when the next season begins. Will the Patriots be able to get out of the rut and once again contend for the Super Bowl? Only time will tell.
