The trade of Saquon Barkley has been one of the most interesting affairs in this NFL offseason. The speculations gathered steam from the very beginning that the RB would leave the New York Giants and would join the Philadelphia Eagles. It finally came true as the RB joined the Eagles. He has received a $37.75 million deal for three years.
The Giants had the option to place a franchise tag on the RB. However, they refused to do so as it would cost them around $12.1 million. They had to restructure their cap and hence the team let Barkley go. Though Joe Schoen claimed that the Jets wanted to keep him in the squad, that did not happen.
Joe Schoen said at the NFL Scout Combine:
He's a guy we'd like to have back.GM Joe Schoen said
He also claimed that the two were working on a new contract. However, that never showed the deadline. As a result, the running back signed a high-pricing deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. The price point created a concern for some analysts. Among those, Nick Wright was one. In the latest episode of the show, First Things First, the analyst claimed that he did not like the price that the Eagles offered him. He stated:
I go down the Eagles list of needs — highest-paid RB in this market's free agency isn't one of them. That's not why they lost. This is not the team that should be spending almost $13M/yr on an RB. But it's fun.Nick Wright said
Adding further, he considered Barkley to be a delicious dessert that the Eagles did not have the luxury of. He found the Eagles’ desperation fun and joyous.

In the show, Nick Wright also spoke about the defensive blunders that the Eagles made last year. He claimed that they lost because of their extremely poor defense which caused a lot of problems. This year, the team needed to secure a good defender and instead, they have gone for an RB. He went on to suggest that the Eagles were confused about their decision-making and hence ended up on the wrong side.
The poor performance of the Eagles led to a disruption in the coaching structure of the team. And despite Coach Nick Sirianni firing Sean Desai as the DC, that did not sort anything out.
This season, the Eagles team needs to come up with better defensive strategies for their success. It is to be seen what tactics they follow in the coming time.
