The US sports personality and Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright slammed the San Francisco 49ers for mistreating their one-time star quarterback Trey Lance. The 38-year-old analyst criticized the team management under the leadership of the head coach, Kyle Shanahan, as the most ‘unprofessional’ in this issue. 

In an interaction with another famous TV personality, Colin Cowherd, on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” show, Wrick said he believes that the process of the 49ers over the last three years regarding Trey Lance has been one of the most ridiculous, unprofessional, and disorganized he has seen in pro sports.

Not only in Colin Cowherd’s show but also Wright criticized the 49ers in ‘First Things First,’ a chat show hosted by Fox Sports. Wright said, “It is a terrible process. If you spend $100 million worth of NFL resources on a player, and then a guy who has had six years and 60 starts for us all to know that he stinks, and says “we value him more,” that means your process is broken. If in the meantime, you stumbled backward into Brock Purdy, maybe that’ll save you, but your process is broken. If you drive your fancy car off a cliff and land next to a hidden treasure, doesn’t mean it was a good idea. It just means you got lucky.”

The development took place after the head coach of the 49ers, Shanahan, named Sam Darnold the backup quarterback in this upcoming season to Brock Purdy. He did not consider Lance a primary backup option and named him the third choice for this season. Shanahan’s decision attracted a lot of criticism from the analysts. Some even suspected that this might be the end of Lance’s 49ers’ career.

Of Course, it will be decided by the team’s general manager whether they will ship him in the coming time. However, this will shake the growth momentum of this star QB.

Trey Lance status in the 49ers?

rey Lance became part of the San Francisco 49ers roster in 2021, marking a significant acquisition with high expectations. Nevertheless, his journey took an unforeseen turn as substantial injuries emerged, posing considerable obstacles to his progress and development within the 49ers’ framework.

His growth was also slow. In addition to this, the rise of Broc Purdy also made things difficult for him. Over time, Purdy was considered a first choice, and Lance was demoted to the second choice. And this season, he has been selected as a third choice. 

The San Francisco 49ers are set to begin their NFL journey on September 9th.
