Can Lamar Jackson really turn the face around for the Detroit Lions who are dubbed by fans as the worst franchise in the league?

The Cleveland Browns completely destroyed the quarterback market last March when they signed a five-year $230 million fully guaranteed contract with Deshaun Watson. The former Texans quarterback had good stats but his win percentage was below average and, coupled with the sexual allegations charges against him made the entire league question the deal.

Seeing Watson get the biggest contract in NFL history made other elite quarterbacks, much more accomplished than him, ask for the same deal. Willingly or unwillingly, a few teams had to give out a multi-year, fully guaranteed contract. This also made the 2019 NFL MVP, Lamar Jackson, ask for upward of a $200 million fully guaranteed contract from the Ravens who rejected his request.

This drama has been going on for close to 12 months now and still, the Ravens aren’t okay with shelling out that much money for someone like Lamar Jackson. After way too much back and forth on the contract negotiations, the Ravens finally placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on the young quarterback. Jackson will earn $32 million in 2023 and will be completely free to have trade talks with any team in the league.

When the news broke out about Lamar Jackson’s franchise tag, teams should’ve been running like hell to talk to him and lock him up for the next decade or so. However, nothing dramatic happened but something completely opposite took place. Atlanta FalconsMiami DolphinsCarolina PanthersWashington Commanders, and Las Vegas Raiders have publicly said that they will not pursue Jackson because they believe Baltimore is going to match their offers anyway. Additionally, these teams are hoping to sign their QB1 in the upcoming draft.

With these teams removed from the pool, fans and analysts are making cases of which team will be the most profitable from signing Lamar Jackson. Nick Wright of First Things First believes the Detroit Lions will be the best fit for the 26-year-old moving forward. “The team that I keep bringing up — it has multiple first-round picks and the money and I think could go to the Super Bowl if everything felt right is Detroit,” Wright said.

The current QB1 for the Lions is Jared Goff who has done a great job of leading the franchise and revamping them. However, Wright believes that the Lions can trade Goff instead of the two first-round picks they have right now and acquire Jackson. Head coach Dan Campbell has a great locker room presence and with Lamar Jackson, he can win the franchise their first-ever Super Bowl.

Lamar Jackson has the skills to lead a team all the way and Detroit also has a great set of weapons on both sides of the scrimmage line. Lions will definitely draft future Pro Bowlers with the two first-round picks in the 2023 NFL draft. If everything works out smoothly then maybe the Lions can be the next big thing in the NFL. Let’s see if Detroit also shares the same views as Nick Wright or will they draft a new QB or just continue with Jared Goff under center?
