Four years ago, back in 2019, the then-Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck suddenly announced his retirement during the preseason game in an all-time NFL-shocker move. The move badly hurt the Colts and their fans. They still haven’t found their franchise QB yet since Luck retired from the sport. However, one man had an interesting reason to hate Luck’s sudden retirement. He was the former Buffalo Bills running back O.J. Simpson.
Simpson, who was apparently at a bar when Luck’s retirement news broke out, went on a rant since he picked the Colts QB in his fantasy team just 90 minutes before the announcement.
“Andrew Luck, what did I do to you?” Simpson said. “You could have retired an hour-and-a-half ago, before I picked you with my fantasy pick. I mean, what did I do? I’ve been a fan of yours. Why would you do this to me? Come out of retirement. I’m just saying.”
Like O. J. Simpson, many other people also had Luck on their fantasy team and they were all disappointed with Luck’s decision to call it quits. As for Luck, the Stanford product was one of the highly touted quarterbacks coming out. He was dubbed as the best QB prospect since Peyton Manning.
He was drafted by the Colts as the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Luck was supposed to be Manning’s successor in Indianapolis. However, Luck’s tenure with the Colts was just filled with injuries. The Colts failed to give Andrew Luck a proper offensive line which resulted in the talented quarterback sustaining several injuries throughout his career.
Why did Andrew Luck retired suddenly?
Back in 2019, when the Colts were hosting the Chicago Bears in a preseason game, reports broke out that Andrew Luck had decided to retire. The news broke out earlier than it was supposed to and Luck was booed out of the stadium by the angry Indianapolis fans.
After the game, Luck officially announced his retirement from Pro Football by saying that he had lost the love for the game and the only way forward was by removing himself from football. Later, in a 2022 interview, Luck claimed that he regrets the timing of his retirement and he felt like he let some people down.
Nonetheless, it has been four years since Luck retired from the sport and the Colts have had different starting quarterbacks in week 1 of all those seasons. Now, they have drafted Anthony Richardson in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Colts are hopeful Richardson will be their franchise QB for the next few years.
