The postgame incident surrounding Odell Beckham Jr. and Jeffery Simmons overshadowed the tightly contested matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans in London. Despite the Ravens winning the match, it has more or less been forgotten because of the bickering between the two star players.
At the center of the scuffle is Ravens rookie wide receiver Zay Flowers. During the game, Simmons, who covers the defensive tackle zone for the Titans, was captured holding Flowers’ leg after a challenge. One is supposed to let go or receive a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct. However, it seemed he was reluctant at first glance.
This was the moment when OBJ entered the frame, and by his actions, he did not seem too pleased with Simmons. He shoved a knee into the big No. 98’s shoulder while trying to get back up. Every action has an equal reaction. Simmons did not appreciate the gesture and pushed Beckham onto the turf.
In a later interview, the 30-year-old claimed that the aggression was necessary to protect Zay Flowers. “I watched him look at the play and then look at Zay’s legs and try and dive on them,” OBJ said. “I just didn’t like that. I’m going to protect him. This is my little bro.” It’s a veteran’s job to look out for the new guy who is still adjusting to life in the bigger league. And even if it means fighting with other players, so be it.
“I’m always going to have his back period,” he added. “I just didn’t like that. That’s all it was. Other than that, it was football.”
Odell Beckham Jr. confronted Jeffery Simmons after the game
Fans may have thought the drama ended on the field, but they were wrong. According to Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey, Simmons went looking for OBJ in the locker room after the game.
“I saw Jeffery Simmons, helmet on. Oh! I am like, ‘He must have family on our team,'” said Humphrey in his recent episode of the “Punchline” podcast. “I went up to him, but he wasn’t waiting for me. So I am like, ‘Okay, whatever, go holler at somebody.'”
Humphrey then proceeded to reveal why Simmons was there. “As my back is turned to him, our guy goes, ‘Rodney, Rodney,'” he claimed. “Rodney is our securities name. And I am like, Any time you start yelling security, you freak out.”
Then he turned around to see that OBJ was allegedly “grabbing his [Simmons] facemask.” It became so intense that security had no choice but to intervene. That’s a mismatch right there. Simmons is a 6-foot-5 300-pounder, while OBJ is 5’11, 200-pound. Thankfully, the clash did not escalate further.
