The Carolina Panthers went out and got their future franchise QB in the 2023 NFL Draft as they selected Alabama quarterback Bryce Young as the No.1 overall pick. It seems like the Panthers fans can finally root for a good signal-caller since Cam Newton, but they will have to wait for more since the franchise is planning to start Andy Dalton in week 1 of the 2023 regular season.
The Panthers signed the veteran QB Andy Dalton in free agency. And now, the Panthers‘ general manager says Bryce Young will sit behind Dalton and learn until he gets ready to play in the league. Scott Fitterer claims Young would be a second stringer in the QB depth chart in week 1.
“We went out and signed Andy Dalton for a reason: He played as a rookie, he’s got a lot of experience, he understands his role and he can play good football,” Fitterer said during his recent interview with Pro Football Talk. Fitterer also claimed that the 3-time Pro Bowler Dalton is the starting QB “right now.” Furthermore, Fitterer also revealed the Panthers’ 2022 3rd-round draft pick Matt Corral also has a shot at winning the starting QB Job.
“If Andy’s the guy to start the season, and he’s the starter right now heading into the season, then he’ll be the guy,” Fitterer said. “When Bryce is ready or Matt Corral is ready, whoever it may be, that’ll be the time they go in. We say it’s open competition, but Frank [Reich] did say, ‘Hey, Andy’s he’s our guy right now. He’ll walk into the season as the starter and then as you know, the young guys compete underneath him, then they’ll go in when they’re ready.”
Well, it seems like the Panthers fans have to tolerate the 35-year-old quarterback Andy Dalton as the starter before they get to see the 2023 1st overall pick Bryce Young in action.
Bryce Young is currently the 2nd string QB over Matt Corral
Bryce Young would start the season for the Panthers as the backup for the former Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton. He will start the season as QB No.2 over the 24-year-old QB Matt Corral.
Dalton played with the New Orleans Saints in the 2022 season. He registered 2871 passing yards, and 18 touchdowns while completing 66.7% of his pass attempts in the 14 games he started.
He comes in with an abundance of experience since he has played for 12 years in the league with 4 different teams. Dalton will mentor both Young and Corral in the 2023 season.
