Justin Herbert’s comments have been making waves on social media among those who believe that the Los Angeles Chargers star quarterback is “holdng-in.” However, Pat McAfee believes that is not the case, as he listened to Herbert’s press conference himself on his show.
He analyzed two videos back-to-back where Herbert spoke to the media, who asked the 25-year-old about being a “hold-in” until a new contract was given to him. Herbert calmly answered, “It’s something he hadn’t thought a lot about.” He elaborated that he was more focused on recovering from his shoulder injury in the offseason. They will deal with it when the time comes, and he has faith in the ‘Chargers organization.’
McAfee had a reaction of shock on his face and replied, “He (Justin Herbert) never said it. He said, ‘I’m not even thinking about it.’ All these headlines and everything else on Twitter are completely false. He didn’t say anything.”
It seems fans and the media, in general, misinterpreted the “we’ll see” remark by Herbert. According to McAfee, Herbert’s replies do not imply that he is “holding-in” for a contract extension.
The Chargers giving Herbert a new deal could be the next big thing in the NFL, as it will make or break the salary cap of every franchise. Good quarterbacks don’t come cheap as they are a rare breed, and McAfee believes that Herbert and Bengals’ Joe Burrow will write the next chapter.
When will the Chargers give Justin Herbert a contract extension?
Earlier this month, during the Chargers annual golf charity match, head coach Brandon Staley revealed that they are negotiating Herbert’s contract, according to Linsay Thiry of ESPN.
Justin Herbert’s girlfriend is Taylor Bisciotti and he will be entering his penultimate year as the Chargers exercised a fifth-year extension last April. Herbert will make around $29.5 million under the fifth-year option; however, he is set to earn only around $4.23 million this upcoming season. That’s way behind the likes of Jalen Hurts of the Eagles and the Ravens Lamar Jackson, who will be earning in excess of $255 million.
Considering his stats, Chargers GM Tom Telesco would not want Herbert to depart. However, Telesco believes quarterbacks earning massive paychecks is not a blueprint going forward.
The Chargers drafted Herbert in 2020 as the No. 6 overall pick. Since then, the tenacious Herbert has racked up 14,089 passing yards, 94 touchdowns, and 35 interceptions.
If Herbert can keep himself fit throughout the season, then the Chargers will have a solid chance of reaching the Super Bowl.
