The Kansas City Chiefs are making sure that they get their money’s worth with Patrick Mahomes. The team’s special teams coordinator, David Toub, shocked reporters earlier today by announcing that their star quarterback doubles as the team’s backup punter. Suddenly, his 10-year, half-a-billion contract does not sound that insane, does it?
Patrick Mahomes can kick the ball. The quarterback was excited after this announcement and immediately took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm. With that being said, it seems like the quarterback is looking forward to taking the field for the Chiefs as a punter.
When the announcement was made, Mahomes posted on X:
I been trying to tell y'all!!!
we got 6,000 videos of you throwing no-look darts and 70-yarders in pregame, yet not one single punt on film?!

JJ Watt, the former defensive end for the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals could not believe Mahomes and he had to call him out on this.
We got 6,000 videos of you throwing no-look darts and 70-yarders in pregame, yet not one single punt on film?!Watt responded to Mahomes’ tweet on X
The quarterback responded with:
Waiting for the right moment! Patience is key!
Patrick Mahomes can punt really well as per the Chiefs’ Special Teams coach
Fans could expect to see Patrick Mahomes punt sooner than expected. The punter for the Chiefs, Tommy Townsend, is listed on the team’s injury reserve, which means he will be gone for at least a week. David Toub went as far as to say that Patrick Mahomes:
Could do it. He shows me all the time he's out there.
Mahomes is trying to compete with Taysom Hill by playing multiple positions, as it may appear. Tommy Townsend, the punter for the Chiefs, is one of the best in the league, and Mahomes has been watching him do his thing for years, so it comes as no surprise that the quarterback has managed to develop his skills as a punter along with being the designated floor general.
At this point, fans can pray and hope that they get to see Mahomes punt the ball. However, what is more interesting is that Travis Kelce, the tight end on the Chiefs has also expressed interest in wanting to punt the ball. So, right now, the Chiefs have their franchise quarterback and his most reliable target competing for the job of backup punter. Mahomes said:
I mean, if Travis gets a punt before I do, I'm gonna be kind of pissed off.
The Chiefs are just completing side quests; the team has been on a winning streak after losing their season opener to the Detroit Lions. Travis is living his best life going out with Taylor Swift, while Mahomes is out here attempting to try his hand at a different position.
