The Washington Commanders‘ newly appointed offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has developed a reputation as one of the best coaches in the league during his time in Kansas City. He was instrumental in creating one of the best offenses in the league and won two Super Bowls with the Chiefs. After five years as Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Bieniemy became Washington Commanders’ OC this offseason.

However, the start in Washington hasn’t been a smooth one for Bieniemy, with multiple players complaining about his coaching style. Even the Commanders’ head coach Ron Rivera admitted to some players having concerns over Bieniemy’s coaching style.

Some of Bieniemy’s former players, including Tyreek Hill and Patrick Mahomes, came to their former coach’s defense. Mahomes was asked in his press conference about the comments that were made about his former offensive coordinator. “He’s going to hold you accountable whenever you don’t even want to hold yourself accountable. And it made me a better player,” Mahomes said.

Further lavishing praise on his former coach, Mahomes said, “I think what he said that was the biggest thing is that he’s your No. 1 supporter, though. He will go to war with you just like any other guy on your team. And you’ve got to know that. And you’ve got to know when he’s talking to you on the football field, that he’s trying to get the best out of you. He’s not trying to put you down. He’s trying to push you to be even better than you think you can be.” (H/T: ProFootballTalk)

Mahomes and Bieniemy developed a great respect for each other during their time together in Kansas City. Now Mahomes will enter this season with a new offensive coordinator in Matt Nagy, whereas Bieniemy will hope to work some of his magic in Washington as he did in Kansas City.

After confirming his players’ “concerns” on Eric Bieniemy’s coaching style, the Washington Commanders’ head coach Ron Rivera has taken back his words. Speaking to the media after Wednesday’s training camp session, Rivera said, “I put my foot in my mouth. I wasn’t as clear as I probably needed to be and I own that and that’s on me.”

This came after Rivera admitted in a press conference on Tuesday that some players approached him to talk about Bieniemy’s intense coaching style. He suggested the players should talk to Bieniemy directly.

This isn’t the first time Ron Rivera has had a strange moment on the podium. He apparently had no clue they could be eliminated when he took the questions in the press conference after their loss to the Cleveland Browns earlier this year.

The Washington Commanders will hope to start this season on a positive note with a win on September 10 against the Arizona Cardinals.
