The Kansas City Chiefs had a rather unexpected start to the season after losing their first game to the Detroit Lions by a single point. While that loss was painful, it also put things into perspective and led to the team getting a reality check, that loss sent a message to them, that it was time to get over the Super Bowl hangover. From that point onward, the Chiefs have won every game that they played. However, despite this, the team’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes is not satisfied with the performance of the offense.
While Kansas City is presently ranked number 9 in terms of points in the NFL and number 4 in terms of yards, the quarterback believes the offense has the potential to be much better. The key to getting there according to Patrick Mahomes is by improving upon their execution. The quarterback had this to say as reported by Pro Football Talk, “I said this after the game and even watching the film you see it even more.” He is referring to the small errors committed by the team during the course of their games.

Mahomes goes on to add, “It’s just the little stuff that we’re not executing at a high enough level. It’s not everybody, and it’s different people in every single play including myself.” He held himself accountable as well and is frustrated that the small execution errors are keeping the Chiefs from playing great football. This just gives an insight into Mahomes as a perfectionist who is still focusing on what the team can do better even though the team is on a five-game winning streak.
Patrick Mahomes believes the Chiefs need to improve on executing the little things better
Speaking about the areas the Kansas City Chiefs need to improve upon, Mahomes further added, “In this league, in order to have these sustained drives and score touchdowns, get in the end zone and score against good defenses, you have to execute- everybody, coaches included, and I think that’s something that we have to continue to get better and better at. I think if we start executing at a high enough level, we have the talent, and we have the play calls so let’s just continue to get better and better.”

The Chiefs’ offense has not been as dominant as they were last season. The team was accustomed to beating opponents by a double-digit margin in almost every other game. Through the first six games of the 2022-23 NFL season, the Chiefs had scored 30 points or higher and won against their opponents thrice. However, this year, they have managed to go above 30 just once.
There have been many reasons for this, Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney have not been able to produce much, Travis Kelce has been doing his thing but he cannot be the sole target of Mahomes as defenses already lock him up. Patrick Mahomes himself has fewer passing yards per game this season, he had 308.8 yards per game last season while that number has slumped to 265.5 this season. His passer rating has witnessed a drop from 105.2 to 95.7 but the one positive aspect has been his pass completion percentage, which is at his career best at 68.5.
The Chiefs have found their groove for the season early on and they will look to keep this momentum going when they face off against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday.
