The NFL world finally recovered from what can be described as a black day in the history of the sport. Buffalo Bills defensive back, Damar Hamlin fell victim to a cardiac arrest following his unfortunate accident with Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tee Higgins.
After a rough 72 hours, Hamlin regained consciousness and returned to cheering his team on social media and via FaceTime on Friday. The league decided to cancel the Week 17 Bills-Bengals game in light of Damar Hamlin’s injury. This opened the league to a slew of complications, which was solved by a proposal that was voted on by team owners.
With this proposal, the NFL changed the seeding criteria in the AFC which impacted the Bengals the most, and the AFC Championship game site was decided to be kept neutral to avoid any unnecessary competitive inequity.
Patrick Mahomes says the Chiefs will play wherever they are asked to play
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, expressed his thoughts on the league’s decision to shift the AFC title game to a neutral site which has raised a lot of eyebrows around the league. “Nothing was going to be fair for anybody, I don’t think,” Mahomes said on Monday. “It’s such a situation that we never encountered before. At the end of the day, I was so happy that Damar was doing better. And that’s the most important stuff.”
The Super Bowl-winning quarterback said the Chiefs are happy with Damar Hamlin getting back up on his feet and they are ready for whatever scenario is thrown their way. Mahomes also said that if the league required them to play at Buffalo (if they face each other in the title game), or at a neutral site, they would do it without hesitation. He added, “But we have to win our first game first. And so we’ll just worry about whoever we play in the first round for us.”
Kansas City is the No.1 seed in the AFC after a 14-3 season and will have a bye week before they face Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens, or Los Angeles Chargers depending on how the Super Wild Card weekend unfolds. The Chiefs have been to the AFC Championship game for four consecutive years. And seeing as how their offense is top-ranked along with Mahomes under center with an arsenal of offensive weapons, it might not be a stretch to say that they will advance to the AFC title game.
As Mahomes said, they are ready to play the title game anywhere they are asked to. They first have to win a crucial game either against the Chargers or the Ravens judging by their performance in the past 18 weeks. But then again, one can never predict who comes out ahead in knockout games like these. It’s going to be an interesting and action-packed weekend.
