This was one of the biggest nights in the history of American sport, the Super Bowl. Rough estimates put the attendance figures at 73,000 plus inside the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Add to it billions watching the event live around the globe on TV, and the hype and boost that the blue- riband American football gets is crazy.

Sunday night was no different in the United States of America, in a final where there were twists and turns, some literal. Patrick Mahomes embraced stardom once again, even as the quality of officiating in the match left many furious, resulting in a few TV sets being smashed and expletives being hurled on social media. In the end, as Patrick Mahomes, the most famous QB currently, guided Kansas City Chiefs to a pulsating 38-35 win over Philadelphia Eagles, all hell broke loose.

It depended on who fans were supporting, for, in a match of this stature, support, and love had to be divided. To say that this is the biggest sporting annual spectacle in the USA would be stating the obvious. This beats all other sports hollows, even though, last week, LeBron James got the NBA’s highest ratings as he eclipsed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar‘s record.

This is the beauty of the Super Bowl, a once-in-a-lifetime watch, if possible, live. Not all can get into the stadium. It’s like the FIFA World Cup final held recently in Doha, where the crème de la crème packed the arena. There was no Deepika Padukone, like in Doha, that December night, but Rihanna performing. And she showed off her bump, expecting again. Rihanna may not have got rave reviews, but even former President Donald Trump, who likes to shoot his mouth off, was nasty with Rihanna.

Trump blowing his trumpet is just one sign of how every Yank gets involved with the Super Bowl. It’s a must-watch, be it a celebrity or a commoner. Rihanna’s halftime show may have been disappointing for some, but the Chiefs certainly did not. There was a debate over the grass and how the match was controlled. In the end, one man walked away with all the glory, Patrick Mahomes.

Google his name and thousands of pages will be thrown up. Even those who are not die-hard NFL fans will vouch Patrick’s efforts this season have been sensational. At 27, he already has an envious record, but the big deal was to compete despite his high ankle injury earlier this season. Even on Sunday night, he was again tackled but came back strongly, the ankle injury not slowing him down.

This NFL season has created plenty of sensational news, with Damar Hamlin suffering a cardiac arrest and then being revived from the jaws of death. It was thanks to the quick attention he received, Damar was rescued and could be a spectator on Sunday night. There were many more well-known names as well in attendance, which included American basketball star Brittney Griner and partner, who was hauled up by the Russians and arrested for a few months last year. Her release by the Russians was dramatic as the trade-off involved a well-known arms dealer caught by the US.

To be sure, the NFL is watched even by politicians, glitterati, and Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian. He had his take, too, on the final. It just goes to show how the Super Bowl gets bigger and bigger. There was criticism for the grass, not the smoke type, as well. In the end, Patrick Mahomes, whose resume is standout, won hearts. He has the looks of an estranged White father and Black Mom. Married and with two kids, the kiss from his wife before the match triggered the right reactions on social media.

Two-time league MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and now the Super Bowl champion. People talk of recently retired Tom Brady as the legend, but this young man has already embraced history and stardom. To sparkle, all season was brilliant, effervescent, and bubbly, like champagne.

Be sure the celebrations will continue long and Patrick Mahomes’ brand value will zoom up further. Being mixed blood he has the looks and swagger of a billionaire. After all, in America, a Super Bowl hero becomes a legend. Just that this 27-year-old could be scripting many more historic triumphs, like the one he did in Glendale, Arizona.
