On Sunday, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs went against their rivals, the Buffalo Bills in their week 14 matchup. Mahomes and the Chiefs were looking to bounce back from their week 13 loss, but they couldn’t out-duel Josh Allen and the Bills to secure a victory. In the end, a controversial penalty negated a Chiefs touchdown in the final minute, leading Kansas City to suffer their 5th loss of the 2023 NFL season.

After the loss, Mahomes was so furious, he started to yell at the referees over their decision. Mahomes had to be held back by his teammates as he was shouting at the officials. After a few seconds, the 2-time All-Pro signal-caller slammed his helmet on the ground in rage.

The play in question happened during the final seconds of the fourth quarter. The Chiefs were trailing by 3 points and managed to score a touchdown on a remarkable backward pass by Travis Kelce to Kadarius Toney. However, the touchdown was negated after refs called an off-side penalty on Toney for lining up in the neutral zone.

It’s the call, and just in that moment, I mean, it’s not even for me; I know how much everybody puts into this game. For it to happen, for a flag to change the outcome of the game. And that moment, I mean, I’ve played seven years and never had had offensive offsides called.
Mahomes said in the post-game presser

There was no question about the penalty since the Chiefs’ receiver Kadarius Toney clearly lined up in the neutral zone. But, Mahomes believes Toney should’ve got a warning instead of a penalty on a game-changing play.

NFL fans on social media blasted Mahomes for his comments on the penalty. Nonetheless, the Chiefs will now look to bounce back from this loss by defeating the New England Patriots, who they are scheduled to face in their week 15 matchup.
