One of the key highlights from the Kansas City Chiefs‘ first playoff win of the season was nowhere near Patrick Mahomes‘ gameplay or how he outperformed his counterpart QB Tua Tagovailoa, it was actually his helmet. Playing in the coldest game on record, a huge chunk of the plastic shell broke off in a collision, right in the middle of Saturday’s game.

When asked the reigning Super Bowl MVP about his helmet-breaking incident, he admitted this was the first time that happened to him and his guesses are at freezing temperature. In his six-year starter career, Mahomes had never played in such cold weather.

I have not. I'm sure it had to do with it being really cold.

Interestingly, the quarterback hadn’t noticed his broken helmet until his teammate mentioned it to him. Despite the compromised equipment, Mahomes wanted to stay in the game and lead his team to victory.

I didn’t know what happened in the moment but I got in the huddle and everyone was telling me, but I was like, 'I got y’all, but I’m not coming out of the game, so we can figure it out on the sideline.' It was a first for me.

However, the incident was so unusual that the NFL officials stopped the game and allowed Mahomes to replace his helmet. But that new helmet was so cold, the Chiefs’ star QB even struggled to put it on, as he shared.

As Mahomes led his team to the 26-7 victory, none of that got remembered at the end and it all worked out in the Chiefs’ favor. As for the helmet, it remains unsure whether the manufacturer had tested it at the extreme level that Mahomes and Chiefs played on Saturday.

Which team the Chiefs are likely to face next?

After this crucial victory in the wild-card round of the playoffs, the Chiefs have succeeded in reaching the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs. Their next possible matchup could be against either the Buffalo Bills or Houston Texans.

The Josh Allen-led Bills, who are coming off winning the AFC North divisional title, first playoff matchup is set to be held against the Pittsburgh Steelers on the upcoming Monday in the wild-card round. If they succeed at claiming a victory, they will host the Chiefs in the divisional round next, at Highmark Stadium.

However, if the Steelers win, the Chiefs will occupy the No. 2 seed in the AFC which means they will be hosting the Texans in the divisional round at Arrowhead Stadium.
