“You’re doing it the right way”: Patrick Mahomes lives by this piece of advice that Tom Brady gave him after the AFC Championship loss to the Patriots
Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady
Patrick Mahomes is arguably one of the most talented quarterbacks, his ability to throw the ball is unparalleled to none. As is the case with many young quarterbacks, the veterans guide them and teach them the tricks of the trade. College football is much different from that of the NFL, here you are playing against grown men who have only one job and that is to play football. Mahomes spent an entire season on the bench when he entered the league behind vet Alex Smith.
Smith groomed him well and to the best of his ability, once Mahomes got the chance to play, there was no going back for the Kansas City Chiefs after that, they had found their franchise QB for the next decade. Mahomes on numerous occasions has said that Smith helped him a lot and has credited his guidance. At the post-game interview of ‘The Match’ that ended on the 1st of June, Mahomes spoke to TNT’s Ernie Johnson and revealed how Tom Brady also had a role in grooming him.
“It was a surreal feeling”: Patrick Mahomes after getting advice from Tom Brady
The Chiefs faced off against Brady and the Patriots in the AFC Championship game in 2019 and they lost to them despite playing well, the final score was 31-37 in favor of the Patriots. Following this game, Tom Brady gave some advice to Mahomes, who had previously never experienced that level of pressure and competition. So what was this piece of advice?
Speaking on how integral mentorship from his vets was, Mahomes said this, ” I want to piggyback off that similar situation, obviously, with me and Alex (Smith), and I know the mentorship things kind of got brought up this offseason as well. I think he said the biggest thing the young guys gotta want to learn, I think it’s more on the young guy to learn from these guys it is than it is for them that be teaching us,” Mahomes stated.
“I think just like when I was talking about Tom (Brady) talking to me, I think the biggest thing he said was, ‘You’re doing it the right way.’ It wasn’t a thing about how I was in the pocket; the fundamentals. He just said, ‘Hey, you’re doing the right wat. Just keep it up.’ And so that for me showed that the hard work that I’ve been putting in was the right thing. I need to keep doing it. Do more of it.” Mahomes stated that this piece of advice has helped him play well and stay consistent in whatever he does.
When asked about the topic of how he felt after he heard the GOAT tell this to him, the QB does not hold back, “It was a surreal feeling, obviously, because it’s him, I watched him growing up and he didn’t win a Super Bowl since I can’t remember. I just lost and didn’t make it to the Super Bowl in my first year starting, this was the end of what I thought was a chance to go out there and get a ring. But then to hear that, I think I, at first, just kind of took it in. A couple of days later it kind of hit me like, ‘Hey, you need to get back on your feet, you did it the right way. Now you got to keep doing it.’ “ Mahomes concluded.
It is understandable that after having a stellar rookie season, Mahomes lost to the greatest ever to do it, you would naturally be disappointed and who would not want to beat TB12 in their first year in the league? Tom’s advice seems to have been the driving force for Patrick Mahomes ever since then.
