It’s not early days anymore in the 2023 NFL season, but the Kansas City Chiefs are still trying to put together an offense that Patrick Mahomes can use to his fullest. However, his frustration was on full display on Thursday night as he struggled to best the Denver Broncos‘ defense.

He knew that the Broncos had the second-weakest defense in the league this season. In spite of that, the Chiefs were having a horrible time converting third downs. They kept bottling the short-yardage situations and had to rely on Harrison Butker‘s field goals to provide them with the lead.

Both defenses were on top throughout the game. So much so that only one offensive touchdown was enough for a 19-8 win for the AFC West leaders. But a competitor like Mahomes won’t be satisfied if he fails to make a positive impact.

Even though the 28-year-old finished the game with 30 passes completed from 40 and 306 yards and 1 touchdown, he was visually irritated on the sidelines after throwing his fifth interception of the season. This proved how much the Denver defense put pressure on them.

If it weren’t for Butker converting from 60 and 52 yards against the Broncos, then the story could have been very different. Only wide receiver Kadarius Toney had an endzone run, and that too came late in the game.

Denver had its moment when quarterback Russell Wilson found receiver Courtland Sutton, who caught a spectacular one-hander in the endzone. This was the only bright spark in an otherwise dim Broncos forward line.

But the second-worst defense in the league couldn’t contain Mahomes. He converted third-and-2 with a 28-yard pass to rookie Rashee Rice. During the post-match press conference, the Chiefs’ QB 1 praised his defense for keeping the game alive.

“Luckily for us,” Mahomes said, “our defense is playing great. They’re playing with confidence.”

Head coach Andy Reid also made positive remarks. “Our defense was incredible tonight, as it has been,” he said. But also reminded that the offense was misfiring all night. “We have to take care of business in the red zone. We had a lot of yards, positive yards, but you can’t stall down there.”

The pick of the bunch was Justin Reid. He recorded 4 tackles, 1 sack, and a pick from Wilson. Nick Bolton caught one interception, while Chris Jones and Drue Tranquill recorded one sack each. With this victory, the Chiefs’ are 5-1 this season.
