Patrick Mahomes is the epitome of greatness as he is not just a star quarterback in the NFL who has turned the fortunes around for his team ever since he stepped onto the professional field a year after being drafted. From that point on, 6 years later, he is a 2x Super Bowl Champion, a 2x Super Bowl MVP, 2x NFL MVP, 2x First-Team All-Pro, and a 5x Pro Bowler.

It came as no surprise that the Kansas City Chiefs in the summer of 2020, after their first Super Bowl win in over 5 decades, made the jaw-dropping announcement. They had signed a contract with Patrick Mahomes for 10 years in total and the QB would be getting an estimated $450 million over that period.

The contract gave Mahomes $63 million as fully guaranteed at the time of signing, another $10 million as a signing bonus, a guaranteed $141 million in the event of an injury, and $477.6 million which will remain in the pipeline and be made available over the coming years based on the quarterback’s roster status.

While this deal was the biggest the NFL world had ever seen to date, just 3-years later, Mahomes has become one of the most underpaid QBs in the league in comparison to his peers. However, the man has his own thought process behind it and to him, it is more important to “try to find a balance” between getting paid fairly and not putting the Chiefs in a position wherein they’d have to end up compromising on the other positions in their roster.

That is exactly what Tom Brady did throughout the duration of his 23-year NFL career. While Brady was a winner for the most part, his quarterback contracts with neither the New England Patriots nor the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were ridiculous to the extent that the team had to compromise upon players in other positions. Tom willingly took that cut to make sure the rest of the team stayed intact because that was the only way to maintain chemistry among players.

Mahomes stated to Albert Breer, “I’ve looked at Tom’s model and how he did it. That’s it, you want to make money for yourself and for your family. You want to keep pushing the market forward for other quarterbacks. But at the same time, I want these other guys to get paid. I want Chris Jones to be in training camp. I want Travis Kelce to always be making money.”

That is the best attitude a team can hope to get from their quarterback. Patrick Mahomes is still making money. It’s not like he is not getting paid well, but he just is not focused on breaking NFL records in terms of contract extensions. Don’t forget, this is just how much he will make off of football. There are other brand deals, there are other ways in which he is easily generating additional income so financially, he is taken care of.

He is in a unique position, and the man is doing everything right. Until Tom Brady retired, nobody dared to wonder if his record of seven Super Bowl victories could ever be broken or matched, however, after Mahomes’ second Super Bowl win, fans are starting to wonder, maybe if there were to be an individual who could achieve this feat, it would be No. 15 on the Chiefs.
