The San Francisco 49ers had a great regular 2023-24 regular season. With the performance of quarterback Brock Purdy, the team won the NFC Championship and marched on to the Super Bowl LVIII for the third time in 10 years. The team, however, had a poor fate as they lost the game in overtime (OT).

This is not the first time the Niners lost in a Super Bowl game. The team suffered similar losses in 2012 and 2019 as well. Nearly 12 years back, the Niners had a similar run to the Super Bowl under the coach Jim Harbaugh but failed to win the title.

And now, Robert Griffin III has found a lot of similarities between the two teams that played in 2012 and 2023. Both teams’ quarterbacks replaced their first-choice ones and had tremendous success. Apart from that, he also pointed out some other key factors that were common between the two teams.

In a conversation with Patrick Willis, the former signal caller asked Willis whom he would pick between Brock Purdy and Colin Kaepernick. Without hesitation, Willis stood by the side of Kaepernick and cited reasons behind the choice. 

Truly for what it’s worth, I’m gonna have to take Kap… He did what he needed to do when we were playing and I know it may not have been in a traditional quarterback throwing way in comparison, but him, you, you guys were something electrifying. So yeah I would most definitely go with Kap, but I love them 1A and 1B.

Brock Purdy and Colin Kaepernick have significant similarities

Both Brock Purdy and Colin Kaepernick were not the Niners’ first-choice quarterbacks. Kaepernick, who had six seasons as the Niners’ quarterback, took over the team from Alex Smith. He delivered tremendous success to the team and took the team to the Super Bowl for the first time in a decade.

Brock Purdy also poses a similar kind of story. The QB took charge when both the Niners’ quarterbacks, Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, were injured. Purdy was the Niners’ third choice in 2022, as a result of being ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ of that year’s draft. However, he destroyed all odds, took the team to the Super Bowl, and delivered an NFC Championship to the Niners as well.

Brock Purdy now comes among the elite quarterbacks in the league. He now needs to win the Super Bowl to nullify the 49ers drought of the ultimate prize of professional football.
