The New England Patriots have successfully stepped into the post-Bill Belichick era after the veteran head coach had to cut his 24-season ties following consecutive losing seasons. Jerod Mayo is the new head coach and he will be responsible for the turnover of the Patriots in the coming time.

Mayo became the 15th coach of the franchise and the first with an Afro-American descendant. In his press conference, the HC thanked the owner Robert Kraft for breaking the racial boundary and keeping his faith in him.

The HC seemed strong regarding the question of race. His strong statement reflected that. Here is what he had to say:

You better believe being the first black head coach here in New England means a lot to me. ... I do see color. If you don't see color, you can't see racism.

Nonetheless, a funny moment erupted in the press conference as a little chitchat took place between the head coach and the owner. Kraft was having some difficulties in pronouncing the name of Mayo’s brother and with a bit of sarcasm in the tongue, the HC came in support of his owner. He sarcastically said, “It is a black name,” and then he helped to pronounce the name.

He assured Kraft:

I'll get it right. No, it's alright. It's one of those Black names.

His boss Kraft also took part in the humour. It indicated a positive sign in the environment. The air was unclear in the last days of the Belichick era as players went against him. Now things look much brighter.

Jerod Mayo has a mammoth task ahead

Mayo’s job in the squad will not be very easy. Despite the difficult days of Bill Belichick’s last phase, one can not deny his legacy in the club. After all, he won six Super Bowl rings with the Patriots squad. A record that seems unbroken.

After taking charge, Mayo spent little time announcing that the Patriots would pick one of the best players as the No.3 pick. Though he did not reveal anyone’s name, he hinted that the Patriots would bring someone who would connect the pieces properly. The Patriots suffered a quarterback crisis this season and in the next season, they would expect better.

Mayo said:

What I will say is this: we’re gonna draft the best player for a position that is very important. You put the pieces together.

It is to be seen, what success the HC delivers in the coming time.
