Patriots owner Robert Kraft is strongly considering moving on from Bill Belichick as his team's HC and GM.

The New England Patriots have been the most underwhelming team this season. The team has managed to win just 1 game out of 6 this season, something that has not happened in decades to this team. This horrendous record has just led to fans and analysts raising the one question that has been on everyone’s mind for years now. Is it finally time for Bill Belichick to hang it up as the Head Coach and General Manager of the Patriots?
This question has come up a lot in the past, but it was not until Tom Brady’s departure that fans were convinced that maybe it was time for Bill to move on from the team as well. The Patriots are a shadow of the dynasty that they once were under the same Head Coach, and it is not just fans who are witnessing this but the team’s owner Robert Kraft is also looking at the dismal record so far. As per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, owner Robert Kraft has started conversations around moving on from Bill Belichick.
Here’s what Breer had to say on The Herd, “These discussions have taken place, and I can tell you for sure, Robert hears the criticism. He hears the anger locally, and people in the building know for a fact that he’s hearing the anger from the fan base. He’s very cognizant of where his team is in the pecking order of NFL teams, as well. They’re not a marquee team, and he took a lot of pride in them being a marquee team for two decades.” Robert Kraft would hate for the goodwill and reputation established by the Patriots from 2000 until now to diminish because of a streak of bad seasons. Breer went as far as to say that “we’re at the point where..is this just going to be a flat out firing.”
Bill Belichick has been the HC of the New England Patriots for 23 years
This would not be an easy decision for Kraft to make as Belichick has been the HC of this team since 2000. He is second behind George Halas in terms of being the longest-serving head coach in NFL history. Before the commencement of this season, he needed 18 total wins to beat Don Shula’s record for most victories in the NFL with 347. However, at the rate at which the Patriots are playing, Belichick is on track to beat Tom Landry who has the all-time record for most losses by any HC in NFL history. Bill currently is sitting on 170 losses and the Patriots have a rough road ahead starting off with Buffalo and Miami. The next 11 games are crucial for Belichick’s legacy as well as for the Patriots.
Robert Kraft is concerned about the fans, who are now outraged at the performance of this team. Without Tom, Bill is feeling the heat as his record without the greatest quarterback of all time has been 26-31. He has led his team to the playoffs just once in 2021 where the Pats lost to Buffalo. Mr.Kraft understands that it is important to keep the fans happy in order for an NFL team to thrive. Besides, he is a businessman, nobody wants to show up to watch a team get beat even if the tickets are given to them for no cost. Why would fans want to pay to watch this underperforming Patriots team? The Patriots have also increased their ticket prices this offseason, they already had the third-most expensive tickets throughout the league before making this decision.
It is an absolute lose-lose for fans as not only would they be paying more but they would be doing so to watch a team play below-average football. For the last two decades, New England has established itself to be a winning team with a winning culture. They have had just three losing seasons under Belichick which came in 2000 which was his first year on the team. The other two losing seasons came in 2020 and 2022 following the departure of Tom Brady.
Bill Belichick’s job is no longer safe and if Robert Kraft has already had discussions regarding the future of the team after Bill, then it will not be surprising to see the Belichick era with the Patriots come to a rather tragic end following this season.
