The football season has finally kicked off, and every fan and analyst has locked in their pick as to who will win the Super Bowl this season. Retired basketball legends Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce chose the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots as their favorites.
Both of these players have played for championship-winning sides, so they know a thing or two about title contenders. They appeared in a recent episode of the KG Certified podcast on Showtime Basketball. Just like regular fans, they got into an argument as to which team had the better chance of winning. Garnett said that the Dolphins, who reached the playoffs last season, will do even better in 2023. Only the Buffalo Bills will pose any challenge, according to the former Celtics man. On the other hand, Pierce argued that the Patriots still have Bill Belichick.
“Miami gonna make it probably before the Pats, bro,” Garnett claimed. “Miami better than the Pats this year.” Pierce stayed adamant that the Patriots are true contenders. “Nah. Bill Belichick is still over there; you must’ve forgotten!” he argued. The duo ended the discussion by agreeing to disagree and also betting on their respective favorites. Apparently, the loser has to treat the other at Mastro’s (a famous steakhouse).
Which team has better odds of reaching the playoffs, the New England Patriots or the Miami Dolphins?

Historically, the New England Patriots have been the dominant team in the AFC East. But in the last four years, the story has been slightly different. Despite Bill Belichick’s presence as head coach, they are projected to finish last. For starters, the AFC is loaded this season, with several teams eyeing a playoff birth. Besides the Dolphins, the New York Jets and the aforementioned Bills are in the mix.
The Dolphins last time around finished the regular season with a 9-8 record, which pushed them into the wildcards. It’s possible that if they were able to field Tua Tagovailoa throughout the year, maybe they could have ventured even deeper into the postseason. In 2023, they are in pole position to do just that. The Patriots went 3-3 against their East rivals. However, there’s doubt whether they will be able to pull that off this time. Considering the Jets now have Aaron Rodgers, Dalvin Cook, and the NFL’s offensive and defensive rookies of the season, they will pose a strong challenge.
Then there are the ever-present bills. If they manage to keep Stefon Diggs happy and Josh Allen firing, then it will be a matter of time before they reach the playoffs. As Paul Pierce pointed out, the Patriots still have Belichick; they will always be a threat on paper. But replicating that on the field so far has been tough without Tom Brady on the team.
