As the College Football season kicks into gear, the unfortunate news from a Pennsylvania high school game has soured the mood. According to sources, Karns City High School quarterback Mason Martin collapsed during a match against Redbank Valley High School in Butler County.
Eyewitness accounts reported that during the third quarter of the game, the young QB was seen stumbling in the middle of the field. Seeing the young man’s condition, referee Mike Vasbiner approached Martin and asked about how he was feeling. Vasbiner later revealed,” I had to talk to him, and when I asked if he was alright, he told me, ‘No.”
Martin, however, passed out before anything could be done and was immediately flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Initial examination revealed that he has “significant brain bleeds as well as a collapsed lung,” his family told KDKA-TV.
In a since-deleted Facebook statement, Mason Martin’s mother, Stacy King, said, “The truth is, we need a miracle. I’m not saying that to sound grim, but to let you know that we need the strength of your prayers.”
She asked everyone to pray for her little boy.“Please pray the way he has always played the game, all out, holding nothing back. We will keep you all updated if anything changes. Thank you; we love you all.”
A prayer vigil was reportedly held for Mason Martin’s quick recovery

After the sad news went public, heartfelt messages poured in from all corners. Everyone wished for a speedy recovery for Mason Martin. Karns City Superintendent Eric Ritzert even declared that a prayer vigil for the senior quarterback would be held Sunday night at Diehl Stadium.
“All are welcome to gather with us in prayer,” Ritzert said, as per Fox News. Moreover, they would also have counselors present for “those in need of support.” Several people turned up for the event the following day.
KDKA-TV interviewed one of Martin’s family friends, Shennell Crissman. Apparently, her son, who was at the ball game on Saturday, saw everything unfold before his very eyes and was left shaken.
“This little man [Mason Martin], this little boy played with so much passion,” Crissman said. “He was worried about everybody and not himself.”
At the time of the unfortunate incident, Redbank Valley had been leading Karns City 35-7. The game was later called off. Classes were to remain closed on Monday in Butler County and resume the following day.
