The Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Perrion Winfrey finds himself in serious legal trouble for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. The 6’4″ defensive tackle was arrested on Monday and is facing misdemeanor charges for assault. Perrion Winfrey is an American football player who plays as the defensive tackle for the Browns. He was drafted by the Cleveland-based football team in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
According to court documents, the incident happened at around 7 PM in Harris County, Texas after the defensive lineman and his girlfriend were involved in a heated argument “over a dog and keys to a rental car.” Furthermore, after the heated argument, Winfrey allegedly grabbed his girlfriend and caused bodily harm and reportedly the bystanders had to intervene to break the dispute.
Additionally, the unidentified victim told the cops that Winfrey had assaulted her before in a separate incident as well. Winfrey was arrested and is now facing misdemeanor charges for assaulting a family member. The hearing is scheduled for next week.
According to ESPN, a spokesperson for the Cleveland Browns said in a statement that the team is “aware of the situation and gathering more information.” Winfrey was expected to attend the team’s voluntary off-season program which is scheduled to start next week.
Perrion Winfrey played at the JUCO level before he started playing Division 1 football
Before Perrion Winfrey became a star playing for the Oklahoma Sooners, he once used to play at the JUCO level since he was ineligible to play at NCAA Division 1 level coming out of high school.
Winfrey spent two seasons playing for the Iowa Western Community College and was ranked by the 247Sports as the best JUCO prospect in the nation. His talent got him multiple D1 offers including from the powerhouses like Alabama, Baylor, LSU, and Texas.
The Star defensive tackle turned down the offers and joined the Oklahoma Sooners football team. Winfrey played two seasons in Oklahoma while registering 40 total tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks in 20 games played.
In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Browns selected Winfrey with their 108th overall pick. He was the sixth defensive tackle taken in that draft. In his first season with the Browns, Winfrey played 13 games sparingly and registered 22 total tackles, 2 QB hits, and 0.5 sacks.
And now, his actions are certainly a cause of concern for the Cleveland-based franchise. The Browns will certainly monitor his situation closely and will take necessary actions in the future.
