“It’s going to be a real battle”: Pete Carroll is cautiously optimistic about Drew Lock and Geno Smith taking the reigns from Russell Wilson

Nobody in the NFL faces an uphill task similar to Pete Carroll. The coach will be without his star quarterback Russell Wilson for a long time, to add salt to his wounds, he also is without Bobby Wagner, a vocal leader in the Seahawks locker room and a star on the field. He is virtually building the team back up with no stars and just your average second and third-round picks. His biggest challenge lies in the most important position, the quarterback.

The Seahawks have had Geno Smith as a replacement quarterback for a long time now, however, no other team wanted Geno and he was to only play in case Russell Wilson got injured. He was thrust into the starter’s role last season after Wilson got injured, in the games that he did play, he was average. He started 4 games, threw for 702 yards in total, and recorded 5 TDs.

“They look in control”: Pete Carroll likes what he sees from his quarterbacks

Drew Lock and Geno Smith
Drew Lock and Geno Smith are both playing equally well in the minicamp, only their preseason performance will determine which of them will start

The post-Russell-Wilson has begun. The team’s Head Coach, Pete Carroll spoke to reporters at the press conference after the team’s minicamp concluded earlier this month. The one question on all of our minds was who will be the starter for the team, Carroll stated that it is still not decided but both Geno Smith and Drew Lock have “shared a ton of reps” during the three-day mandatory camp.

The team got Drew Lock from the Russell Wilson trade with the Denver Broncos. Carroll praised both his QBs and claimed that “They look in control, they’ve done a terrific job so far.” He appears to be optimistic about his QB situation despite it being ranked as probably one of the worst in the league.

Lock, who was in Denver last year, was inconsistent on a consistent basis. His record in the last two seasons is 4-12. Coming to Geno Smith, the backup for Wilson for the last three years has been struggling with injuries for a significant part of his career.

He was drafted by the Jets and then went to play for the Giants before ending up on the LA Chargers. One year later he was in Seattle and ever since then he has been there. Pete Carroll who made the Seattle Seahawks one of the top teams across the NFL in the 2010s claimed that he is confident in both his quarterbacks.

Coming to who will get the starter’s job, we will find out after the preseason. The preseason will be the final test for both quarterbacks. “The games are going to be important, and everything will be important, it’s going to be a real battle. It’s going to be a really exciting time for our team, for those guys in particular, and for our people-watching. I’m pumped about it. I really am,” Pete Carroll concluded.

Will Seattle manage to stay afloat this season without their star quarterback on board or will they be forced into rebuilding the roster? Only time will tell.
